CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 2,478 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,212, 37.2% of 2020 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
70.4% of 2020 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by blending mainstream practicality with a more premium feel than many shoppers expect from a compact crossover. Mazda’s approach is to move the CX-5 into “premium” territory, combining the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology associated with luxury brands. That positioning helps explain why it is Mazda’s most popular vehicle, and why it appeals to buyers who want something more distinctive than the typical small SUV.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 especially appealing is its premium interior materials, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character. Owners also praise its comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, ample highway power, and safety features, along with the luxurious feel of the cabin. At the same time, the CX-5 is not without drawbacks: its technology is described as outdated, and some owners wish for more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,257 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,188 |
| Year-Round High | $20,607 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,608 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.70% |
Prices have softened 1.70% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,427 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare on price and condition.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and ample highway power. They also highlight the safety features and the luxurious feel of the cabin, which fits the CX-5’s more premium positioning.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and the limited cargo space and rear legroom that some shoppers mention. The overview also frames it as a compact crossover that aims to feel more upscale than typical mainstream rivals, so it makes the most sense if you want a distinctive small SUV rather than maximum utility.
Only 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the best examples may move quickly.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with repeated praise for the comfortable cabin, smooth ride, and safety features that help the vehicle feel easy to count on. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Mazda’s strong build quality and the sense that the CX-5 delivers more than a typical mainstream SUV.
The cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces that Mazda has held the line on pricing while improving the product, which supports confidence in long-term ownership value. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and still feels fresh enough for your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because the CX-5 is positioned as a premium-feeling compact SUV, condition matters a lot: worn interior materials, neglected maintenance, or unresolved electronics issues can quickly erode the appeal.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport trim has a 7-inch touchscreen, but it only responds to touch when the vehicle isn’t moving, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring adds an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services. If you want the best value, Touring is the trim that adds the most everyday usability over Sport.
- Powertrain: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and available AWD. Grand Touring Reserve and Signature upgrade to a turbocharged version with 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel, and those trims come only with AWD.
- Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included, while adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring.
- Infotainment: Sport uses a 7-inch touchscreen, Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Grand Touring gets an 8-inch touchscreen plus satellite radio and a 10-speaker Bose system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services.
- Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine is rated at 26 mpg combined with AWD and 28 mpg combined with FWD, while the turbocharged version is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, six-speed automatic, and Mazda Connect infotainment. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it leaves out the smartphone integration that many shoppers expect.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on top of the base setup. If you want the CX-5’s premium feel without stretching too far up the lineup, this is the trim to focus on.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds the 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and the 10-speaker Bose audio system, making it a stronger pick if you care about cabin tech and sound quality.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is the first trim to get the turbocharged engine, so it’s the choice if you want more power and stronger highway acceleration.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with navigation, a surround-view camera system, and premium interior touches that best match the CX-5’s upscale mission.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, and adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.
- Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,427 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,188, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $20,257 sits slightly below last year's $20,608.
That modest decline suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit in the market, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the price movement is not steep enough to suggest weak demand.
Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and a premium-feeling reputation, it should remain appealing to used shoppers who want a compact SUV with a more upscale character. That helps support resale value better than you might expect for a mainstream-brand crossover.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included, and adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring.
That combination makes safety one of the CX-5’s biggest strengths, and there isn’t a major caveat in the test-drive data to offset those results.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year keeps the premium-feeling cabin, strong safety suite, and turbocharged upper trims.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,928, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,257 average.
- The 2019 adds smartphone connectivity and turbo power while improving handling.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,019, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,257 average.
- The 2021 adds updated tech and a new lineup variant.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and premium feel, the 2020 is the strongest all-around pick. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 is worth a look for its lower average price, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer model-year updates and are willing to pay more.
