Why it stands out
The 2020 Kia Soul stands out because it blends the utility of a small SUV with the efficiency and driving refinement of a compact car. Its compact, boxy styling gives it a distinctive look, and that shape helps it deliver form and function in equal measure. It is also unusual in how it fits into the market, since it can be compared with small hatchbacks and subcompact SUVs alike.
For buyers, the Soul’s appeal comes from its spaciousness and easy-to-use technology, along with a lower starting price than most of its competitors. The car’s latest redesign gives it a more futuristic appearance, which adds to its personality and helps it feel modern and distinctive. At the same time, it is not without compromises: advanced safety features are not standard, and its performance is fairly pedestrian.

It has most of the features that I want in a car. Just missing the push start button.

The car handles great (a lot better than expected) and the gas millage is very good. The pick up with the CVT transmission is very good (again better than expected). The only complaint i have is that the drivers seat bottom doesnt tilt. It gets a little uncomfortable after an hour of sitting. The gas millage is 34.5 mpg average according to the computer, Ill verify that at the time of filling up. If the computer is accurate, the millage is very good considering my trip to work is very hilly.

This is the perfect car for us to pull behind our motorhome. Plus it’s extremely cute and fun to drive. Surprisingly it does not feel cramped. So far we love it.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle people tend to count on for everyday use, with repeated praise for its reliable feel, spacious cabin, and trouble-free ownership experience. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Soul delivers refined driving dynamics and a capable platform, which supports the impression of a well-rounded, dependable used car.
The ownership picture is helped by the model’s straightforward mechanical setup and its reputation for being easy to live with. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent maintenance and no hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Soul?
At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches the trim being advertised. Because advanced safety features are not standard, it’s worth checking exactly which driver-assistance items are present on the car you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is pretty basic, with 16-inch steel wheels, manual front-seat adjustments, one USB input, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows, and not much else. The S adds 16-inch alloy wheels, body-color mirrors, premium cloth seats, remote keyless entry, and a fuller driver-assistance set, while the EX adds more comfort and convenience equipment. The S is the best-value choice because it adds the most useful equipment without pushing the price up too far.
- Powertrain: Most trims use a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT. The base LX comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, and the GT-Line Turbo uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The base engine is described as refined and surprisingly capable for everyday driving.
- Safety package: The S trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection. The X-Line loses forward-collision warning, while the EX brings it back. The GT-Line Turbo adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection.
- Infotainment: The LX, S, X-Line, and GT-Line use a 7-inch touchscreen, while the EX and GT Turbo get a 10.25-inch screen. All trims include Kia’s UVO system plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger screen is the standout upgrade if you want a more premium-feeling cabin.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2-liter engine with automatic transmission returns 27 mpg city, 33 highway, and 30 combined. The base manual LX returns 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined. The turbo model returns 27 mpg city, 32 highway, and 29 combined.
Which 2020 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2020 Kia Soul is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, S, X-Line, EX, GT-Line, and GT-Line Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Soul’s core shape, basic equipment, and standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and are comfortable with a sparse feature set.
- S: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, premium cloth seats, and a much more useful safety package, making it the smartest buy for most shoppers.
- X-Line: This trim adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, body cladding, and a more adventurous look, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. It’s for you if style matters more than value.
- EX: This trim is the comfort upgrade, with heated side mirrors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, extra USB ports, and the larger 10.25-inch screen. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver.
- GT-Line: This trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels and unique exterior styling. It’s the choice if you want a sportier appearance without moving to the turbo model.
- GT-Line Turbo: This is the most powerful and best-equipped version, with the turbo engine, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, upgraded interior details, a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon audio, and pedestrian detection. It’s the right pick if you want the most performance and features.
The safety package starts on the S trim, but the X-Line loses forward-collision warning, so check equipment carefully before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,474 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,705.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $12,707 sits slightly below last year's $13,779.
That price movement suggests the Soul has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. If you pay near the lower end of the current range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting your loss later. The model’s broad appeal and strong value reputation should help keep demand steady among budget-minded shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Kia Soul safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The S trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection.
A key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, and the X-Line loses forward-collision warning before it returns on the EX. That makes trim selection especially important if safety tech is a priority for you.
Should I buy a 2020 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its refined driving dynamics, lower starting price, and form-and-function packaging.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $13,880, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $12,707 average.
- It adds a standard rear occupant alert.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly newer model with a small safety update, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative. For most price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 remains the smarter path.
