Why it stands out
The 2020 Kia Forte stands out as an affordable compact sedan that delivers a lot of room for the money, with space that comes close to what you might expect from a midsize sedan. It also brings the performance character of an entry-level sport sedan, which helps make it feel more distinctive than a typical economy car. The Forte GT in particular is described as a turbocharged sport sedan that is terrific fun to drive, and the car’s German-influenced design and engineering story adds to its appeal for buyers who want something a little more special.
Beyond its driving personality, the 2020 Kia Forte also earns attention for its stylish design, premium interior materials, and excellent value for money. Those strengths make it easy to recommend to shoppers who want an attractive, well-equipped compact sedan without paying a premium. The main drawback noted is the underwhelming base engine, so buyers focused on everyday value may be satisfied, while those expecting stronger acceleration may want to look more closely at the performance-oriented version.

I have the LXS model, this is loaded with very feature from Collison avoidance to lane assistance. Smart mode gets 41 mpg while sport mode provides nice performance at the cost of 21 mpg. Its like I have 2 cars in 1 and if the emblem said Honda or Toyota I would have easily spent 10k more

The car is comfortable and moves well. The lack of fast acceleration is noticeable, but the handling is superb.

Oh wow, I love this car! the forte GT model has everything you would want in a car at a fantastic price and the warranty is out of this world Kia has one of the best there is to offer. The car handles extremely well and has more speed than you really need at times and if your just a average driver that is ok your the pick up speed in any mode is great but the sport is like a rocket. I also love the sound system in this car excellent crisp sound. and the comfort of the seats are very relaxing and heated as well as cooled. you have great visibility with plenty of windows to avoid the blind spots. the out side is stunning with the color contras mine is black and red very sexy. Over all i would recommend this car as of now but I only had it for a week and so far Im in love I find my self running to the store way out of my way for no reason at all just to sit in it and listen to the music and drive.

Unbelievable value. My model is the 2020 Forte GT DCT w/GT2 package. Very peppy engine that has a lot of energy. Endless safety features. Overall style is very impressive and gets compliments from everyone. Its very fun to drive. The sport exhaust sounds amazing and the turbo whistles everytime you pull away.

Drivers consistently praise its stylish design, great value, and fun driving experience. The review summary also points to strong fuel economy, smooth handling, and a powerful engine. On the trade-off side, the expert notes call out the underwhelming base engine and the user feedback mentions slower acceleration than some buyers expected.

Is the 2020 Kia Forte reliable?

The review summary points to a car that drivers enjoy for its dependable feel, strong value, and trouble-free ownership experience. The expert notes reinforce that impression by describing the Forte GT’s powertrain as exceptionally well behaved and its driving character as buttoned-down and trustworthy. The cost-effectiveness notes also highlight the long warranty coverage, which adds peace of mind for used buyers.
For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying a neglected example, so a clean service history matters more than usual.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Forte?
At 64.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a GT or a higher-mileage car. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car’s equipment and safety systems work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GT adds a turbocharged engine, a dual-clutch transmission, a sport-tuned suspension, active exhaust, larger front brakes, and bigger machined-finish 18-inch wheels. The interior also gets red seat piping, red stitching, a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, and gloss black trim with metallic accents. If you want the most complete and engaging version, the GT is the one to target.
- Powertrain: The GT uses a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder with 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic or an available 6-speed manual. Other Fortes use a 147-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder.
- Safety package: The Forte comes with numerous advanced driver-assistance systems, and the GT with the GT2 Package includes all of them. The suite includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and 911 Connect. Some features have limits, including low-speed-only emergency braking and adaptive cruise control that does not bring the car to a full stop.
- Infotainment: Every 2020 Forte has an 8-inch touchscreen, plus Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a reversing camera. The Forte EX and GT also add SiriusXM satellite radio and connected services through Kia’s Your Voice (UVO) technology.
- Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the provided data.
Which 2020 Kia Forte trim should I buy?
The 2020 Kia Forte is offered in 4 trim levels: LXS, EX, GT-Line, GT.
Here's the short version:
- LXS: This is the value-oriented step up from the base car, adding nicer wheels and a few extras while keeping the Forte’s affordable mission intact. It makes sense if you want a better-equipped daily driver without paying for the sportier trims.
- EX: This is the best-value trim if you want the most comfort and convenience without the GT’s performance hardware. The expert notes specifically say to stick with the EX if you’re not interested in driving fast.
- GT-Line: Choose this if you want sporty styling without the GT’s actual performance character. It’s the appearance-focused choice for buyers who care more about looks than speed.
- GT: This is the enthusiast pick, with the turbocharged engine, sport-tuned chassis, and stronger brakes that make the Forte feel genuinely sporty. It’s the trim to buy if you want the most engaging version and are willing to pay for it.
The GT with the GT2 Package gets all of the Forte’s advanced driver-assistance systems.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Forte?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and still find a decent deal.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,485 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.82% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,689, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Kia Forte's resale value?
The current average of $12,874 sits slightly below last year's $13,815.
That price movement suggests the Forte has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be steadier if you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition. The GT’s stronger enthusiast appeal may also help it hold attention better than a plain commuter trim.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Kia Forte safe?
The 2020 Kia Forte earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Forte comes with numerous advanced driver-assistance systems, and the GT with the GT2 Package includes all of them. Standard and available features mentioned here include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and 911 Connect. The expert notes also point out that automatic emergency braking works only at lower speeds, adaptive cruise control does not bring the car to a full stop, and lane-centering shuts off if you take your hands off the wheel.
Should I buy a 2020 Kia Forte or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.82% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The GT stands out this year as an affordable turbocharged sport sedan with strong performance and a polished, German-influenced feel.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $11,580, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $12,874 average.
- It was completely redesigned and offers strong everyday practicality with room for passengers and cargo.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2020 is the better pick because it combines value, safety, and a standout GT trim with real enthusiast appeal. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2019 is the smarter budget alternative, especially if you mainly want a practical daily driver.
