CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Civic
overall

Summary
With 2,768 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,909.00, 29.9% of 2020 Honda Civics for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Civic 4.9 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
60.4% of 2020 Civic models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic stands out as one of the best small cars you can buy, and its appeal comes from a mix of value, variety, and polish. For its 2020 model year, it received minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions. It also continues to offer the performance and quality of more expensive cars while retaining the value and longevity expected of a Honda.
Another strength is how many ways it can fit different buyers. The Civic offers multiple body styles and multiple powertrain options, which helps it cover a wide range of needs without losing its broad appeal. At the same time, it is not without compromise: outdated technology is a noted drawback, and some owners wish it had a bit more power and more USB ports. Even so, the 2020 Honda Civic remains a well-regarded choice for shoppers who want an affordable, reliable small car that is still enjoyable to drive.

Car drives really smooth, a great upgrade from my 2010 Kia Forte Koup. Everything in the car works great (was told most Hondas have AC issues but haven't had any issues with mine so far) highly recommend

I love this car. I just hope that future models will have blind spot on both passenger and drivers side. Otherwise, I think the car is near perfection. Great value for all it has to offer. The heated seats are a plus is cold weather.

2020 Honda Civic Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2020 Honda Civic prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2020 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,911 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,330.33 |
| Year-Round High | $19,970.05 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,968 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.29% |
Prices have softened 5.29% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,837 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing trims and body styles.
If you find a listing below $18,330.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The expert rating is 8.17/10.
The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the Civic’s smooth ride, great fuel economy, fun driving experience, stylish design, and safety advancements. The model also gets credit for being reliable and affordable, which lines up with its broad appeal as a compact car that feels more polished than many rivals.
The main trade-offs are that it could use more power and more USB ports, and the infotainment system is dated and more complex than it should be. Even so, the Civic fits well if you want a practical daily driver with strong value, multiple body styles, and a well-rounded mix of comfort and performance.
Good and great deals account for 28.7% of listings, so there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe the Civic as reliable, and the overall feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience that many buyers can count on. The expert review reinforces that impression by emphasizing the Civic’s longevity and value, along with its strong overall execution.
The powertrains are described as smooth and flawless, which supports confidence in everyday use. The cost-effectiveness review also notes that the Civic delivers a lot of refinement and quality for the money.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the Civic’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?
At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing cars with similar prices but very different condition histories.
Focus on signs of uneven wear, incomplete repairs, and any evidence that the car’s safety systems or electronics were affected. Because the Civic’s value proposition depends so much on condition, a clean, well-kept example is worth prioritizing over a cheaper car with a murkier past.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX misses some of the nicer convenience and tech features found higher up the range, including the standard 7-inch touchscreen and Honda Sensing coverage on every trim except the base LX.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter engine with 158 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with 174 horsepower; the turbo engine is the better pick for stronger mid-range response.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The suite is standard on most trims, but not the base LX.
- Infotainment: Most models get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while top trims add Garmin-based navigation. The system is dated and more complex than newer Honda setups.
- Fuel efficiency: The base LX sedan is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined, while most CVT-equipped Civic models return at least 30 mpg city and as much as 42 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LX is the value play, but it lacks the standard 7-inch touchscreen and Honda Sensing coverage found higher in the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Sport is the best balance if you want more style and equipment without moving too far up in price.
- Premium/top trim: The EX is the better choice if you want the turbocharged engine and more standard comfort and convenience features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?
The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,837 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,330.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $18,911 sits slightly below last year's $19,968.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale values may stay under pressure if the market remains well supplied. For a seller, the upside is that the Civic still has strong name recognition and broad appeal, which helps support demand.
Because the model continues to score well with owners, it should remain attractive to used buyers over time. Well-kept examples with clean histories are likely to hold up better than cars with accident records or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?
The Civic earned the Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rated it five stars in all categories except for a four-star passenger frontal crash rating on the coupe.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. That suite is standard on most trims, but the base LX misses out.
One caveat to keep in mind is the coupe’s lower passenger frontal crash rating from NHTSA. If safety is a top priority, you may want to pay closer attention to body style and trim when shopping.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Minor design tweaks and more standard safety and convenience features make this year a meaningful update.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,532, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $18,911 average.
- It adds a new Sport trim and keeps the Civic’s strong style-value-performance formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,713, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,911 average.
- It remains practical and fun to drive, with a spacious cabin and strong cargo utility.
The bottom line: The 2020 Civic is the right pick if you want the best mix of value, safety, and updated features without paying more for the next model year. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the better price-first alternative, while the 2021 makes sense if you want to spend more for a slightly newer example.
