CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 876 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,709, 29.9% of 2020 Honda Civic Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
57.2% of 2020 Civic Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback stands out as a small car that blends style and driving enjoyment in a way that still feels appealing in the used market. Honda’s own description calls it “the hottest hatch around,” and while that is clearly hyperbole, the car does earn attention for its stylish design and fun-to-drive character. It also fits neatly into the broader comeback of hatchbacks as practical, desirable cars rather than compromises.
What makes the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback especially attractive is that it delivers the kind of sporty, efficient personality many buyers want from a hatchback. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its sporty handling, stylish design, and impressive fuel efficiency, along with improved features and sound insulation over previous models. The main drawback noted in the test-drive data is outdated technology, and some owners also feel the pricing is on the high side for a used vehicle.

Reviewed a 2020 Honda Sport FWD on Dec 31, 2022
To start on the overall the 2020 civic hatchback sport made some MAJOR improvements! Before the 2017-2019 “sport” trim used to take away features that a normal civic EX would have. However in 2020 the sport trim got almost all of the goodies (excluding a few feature like and heated seats) Ranging from a better display to navigation system as well as a ton more informational features that’s are extremely important. Lastly the thing that makes any year civic hatchback amazing is the MPG. I took a 10 hour trip and averaged 47 MPG. If your looking for a efficient gas saving, sporty looking car (also easily moddable) well then let me tell you here’s an option!

Peppy acceleration, sports car like handling and 37 mpg, loving it so far! Also, I read some complaints of road noise and that seems to have been resolved this year.

Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car people feel good about keeping, with language centered on sporty handling, impressive fuel efficiency, and improved features that make it feel more polished than earlier versions. The expert notes also describe the car as quiet, refined, and well mannered, which supports the sense that it’s easy to live with over time.
The ownership picture is helped by the car’s generally dependable, trouble-free character in the way it’s described by owners and experts alike. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core driving experience and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 57.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had body damage or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because the technology is described as outdated, it’s worth checking that every feature you care about is present and functioning before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the least expensive choice, while the Sport, EX, and EX-L add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The Sport Touring sits at the top with stitched leather on the steering wheel, soft surfaces, quality materials, and a more premium cabin presentation. If you want the best value, the Sport is the trim that most closely mirrors the look of the higher-end model without jumping all the way to the top price.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L make 174 horsepower, while Sport and Sport Touring make 180 horsepower. The CVT is the efficiency-oriented choice, while the 6-speed manual brings a more involved driving feel.
- Safety package: Every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing, which bundles forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. CVT-equipped versions also add low-speed following. The car does not include blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: In all but LX trim, you get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and a volume knob. Sport Touring adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, text-messaging support, navigation, a quick-charging USB port, and a 12-speaker premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test car returned 32 mpg in combined driving, and the testing loop produced 32.7 mpg. That makes the hatchback a strong fit if you want a sporty compact car that still keeps fuel use in check.
Which 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the lowest purchase price and are comfortable with the simpler equipment set. It gets the core Civic Hatchback formula without the extra features found higher up the range.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it closely matches the more stylish look of the higher trims while staying below the top-end pricing. It’s the trim to target if you want the hatchback’s sporty personality without paying for luxury-style extras.
- EX: This trim is the step up if you want more comfort and convenience than the Sport, while still staying short of the leather-lined upper end of the lineup.
- EX-L: This is the choice if you want the more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it. It’s the trim that leans most into comfort and premium presentation.
Every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing, so you get the core safety package no matter which trim you choose.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 909 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,445, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $19,806 sits slightly below last year's $21,043.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what you recover later as a seller. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to limit depreciation pain. The hatchback’s broad appeal and sporty reputation should help it stay relevant with used shoppers, but resale will still depend heavily on mileage, condition, and maintenance history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback did not earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety because of a Poor performance in the headlight category.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing, which brings forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. CVT-equipped versions also add low-speed following. The main caveat is that this version of Honda Sensing is described as aging, with lane-keeping assist that lacks refinement and adaptive cruise control that can brake for no apparent reason. The car also does not offer blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, relying instead on LaneWatch for the right-side blind spot.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 refresh brought styling updates, improved sound insulation, and better feature packaging.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed Civic Hatchback with strong owner satisfaction and a more appealing used price than it had a year ago, the 2020 model is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and focus on the lower end of the range, but the 2020 is the better pick when you want the updated look and the strongest overall balance.
