Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Civic 4.9 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic stands out as one of the best small cars you can buy, and its appeal comes from a mix of value, variety, and polish. For its 2020 model year, it brings minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions. It also continues to offer the performance and quality of more expensive cars while keeping the value and longevity expected of a Honda.
Another reason the 2020 Honda Civic remains distinctive is its breadth of choices. It offers multiple body styles and multiple powertrain options, which helps it suit a wide range of buyers. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: outdated technology is listed as a con, and some owners say it could use a bit more power and more USB ports. Even so, it is widely regarded as a reliable, affordable, and enjoyable car to live with.

Car drives really smooth, a great upgrade from my 2010 Kia Forte Koup. Everything in the car works great (was told most Hondas have AC issues but haven't had any issues with mine so far) highly recommend

I love this car. I just hope that future models will have blind spot on both passenger and drivers side. Otherwise, I think the car is near perfection. Great value for all it has to offer. The heated seats are a plus is cold weather.

How much does the 2020 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,724 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,329 |
| Year-Round High | $19,897 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,894 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.88% |
Prices have softened 5.88% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,590 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and fun driving experience. They also highlight the stylish design, tech features, and safety advancements, while still describing it as reliable and affordable. On the downside, the expert review points to outdated technology and notes that some buyers may want more power and more USB ports.
Given its broad mix of body styles and powertrain choices, it works well if you want a compact car that feels more polished than its price suggests. 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary describes it as reliable and affordable, and it also emphasizes the car’s smooth ride, great fuel economy, and enjoyable driving character. The expert review reinforces that dependability by describing the powertrains as flawless and noting the Civic’s value and longevity. It also points to a strong ownership experience overall, with the car delivering more refinement than you might expect at this price.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?
At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with a lower price or higher mileage. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the equipment and safety features still function as expected. Because the Civic lineup spans multiple body styles and trims, it’s worth making sure the specific car you’re looking at matches the equipment you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Civic comes in three body styles—sedan, coupe, and 4-door hatchback—and the base LX is the most stripped-down version, since the 7-inch touchscreen is standard on all models except the base LX. Higher trims add more convenience and comfort features, and the Touring and Si models get LED headlights.
- Powertrain: The base LX and uplevel Sport use a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. EX and above trims use a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 with 174 hp and 162 lb-ft, while hatchback Sport and Sport Touring models make 180 hp. The 1.5-liter engine is preferred for stronger mid-range acceleration and responsiveness.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is standard on Si models and on every other Civic trim as well.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard on all models except the base LX, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is described as outdated and more complex than newer Honda interfaces.
- Fuel efficiency: The Si is rated at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. Most Civic models with the CVT reach at least 30 mpg city and as high as 42 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the most basic equipment. It uses the 2.0-liter engine and standard CVT, but it also misses out on the standard 7-inch touchscreen found on the higher trims.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more equipment while keeping the Civic’s core value proposition intact. It also gives you more of the Civic’s style and feature content without jumping to the pricier turbocharged trims.
- EX: This is the better pick if you want the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and a more upscale daily-driving experience. It’s the trim to choose if you care more about added refinement and stronger mid-range response than about keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
Honda Sensing is standard across the lineup, so you don’t need to move up for the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,590 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,329, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $18,724 sits slightly below last year's $19,894.
That price movement suggests the Civic has softened enough to help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays soft. For you, that can be a plus on the purchase side because depreciation has already done some of the work. If you keep the car in good condition and choose a well-equipped trim, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?
The 2020 Honda Civic earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings in all categories from NHTSA, except for four stars in the passenger frontal crash rating on the coupe.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Honda also improved the optional LED headlights, which helped secure the IIHS recognition for all body styles except the Type R, which wasn’t tested. The one caveat to keep in mind is the coupe’s lower passenger frontal crash result from NHTSA.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions are the standout changes for this model year.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,366, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $18,724 average.
- It offers a polished, high-quality driving feel with broad body-style and powertrain variety.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,474, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,724 average.
- It’s the outgoing generation with style, versatility, and an engaging driving character.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the right pick if you want the best balance of price, safety, and variety in this generation. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the last year of the outgoing Civic and don’t mind paying more.
