The main trade-offs are that the interior design and features can feel mixed, and some owners reported engine-related frustrations. In practice, that means you should expect a truck that feels versatile and well equipped, especially if you want something that can handle daily driving and worksite duty.

The expert drive notes reinforce that sense of durability by emphasizing the Sierra’s utility-minded design and its ability to serve as both a commuter and a work truck. The AT4’s rugged hardware also suggests a truck built to handle demanding use.

If you’re shopping used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that some trucks have reported engine-related issues, so condition and maintenance history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?

At 74.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-road driving, or heavy work. Focus on signs of wear that could affect ride quality, drivetrain health, and interior condition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim comes with a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and LED headlights. The SLE adds another USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry, while the Elevation adds heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel. The SLT adds many of those comforts with more classic chrome styling, the AT4 adds off-road-oriented hardware and rugged touches, and the Denali brings the most luxury-focused equipment.
• Powertrain: The Sierra offers five engines, including a 4.3-liter V6, a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a Duramax turbodiesel 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. The lineup gives you a wide spread of power and efficiency, and the AT4’s 6.2-liter V8 is the strongest setup described.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror. Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, AT4.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point if you want the Sierra’s core utility and the standard tech basics without paying for extras. It makes sense if you’re focused on value and can live without the nicer comfort and convenience upgrades.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds an 8-inch touchscreen, a WiFi hotspot, remote keyless entry, and another USB port. It gives you a more modern daily-driver feel without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and more comfort features, including heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel. It’s a good fit if style matters as much as utility.
• SLT: This is the trim CarGurus recommends, and it’s the one to target if you want a more road-friendly setup with many of the comfort features found in the AT4. It’s the most balanced choice if you want capability without the AT4’s rougher ride.
• Denali: Pick this if you want the most luxury-focused Sierra, with features like a head-up display, navigation, wireless device charging, and lots of chrome and larger wheels. It’s the premium choice for shoppers who want a more upscale truck.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented trim, with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, and Rancho off-road shocks. It suits you best if you want rugged capability and don’t mind a rougher on-road ride.

Advanced safety features are not standard, so check equipment carefully on any trim you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends pickup utility with SUV-like comfort and easy-to-use technology.

Consider the 2019 if:
