What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford F-150?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has been used for towing, hauling, or off-road driving. Focus on overall condition, because trim and equipment differences can be significant on this model year.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XL is the work-truck starting point with steel wheels, air conditioning, manual locks, and a basic driver display, while the XLT adds 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, chrome bumpers and grille, cruise control, SYNC 3, and a WiFi hotspot. Higher trims add more comfort and luxury, but the base trim is light on features.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 290-hp 3.3-liter V6, a 325-hp 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, a 395-hp 5.0-liter V8, a 375-hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and a 250-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. The stronger engines are better suited to towing and hauling, while the base V6 is more for daily driving.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 can include automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Some features are standard only on higher trims, and advanced safety tech is not standard across the lineup.
• Infotainment: The XLT’s SYNC 3 uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, enhanced voice recognition, pinch-to-zoom map functionality, and smart-charging USB ports. The XL’s SYNC system is optional and adds a touchscreen, USB ports, and voice recognition.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive returns 21 mpg city, 29 highway, 24 combined. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined. The V8 returns 17 mpg city, 23 highway, 19 combined.

Which 2020 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford F-150 is offered in 7 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the most affordable work-truck choice, with steel wheels, air conditioning, manual locks, a basic driver display, and standard forward automatic emergency braking. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and don’t need much equipment.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds SYNC 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, cruise control, chrome exterior touches, and a WiFi hotspot. It gives you the biggest jump in everyday usability without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Lariat: This trim is the sweet spot if you want more comfort, with leather-trimmed seats, heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and heated power-folding mirrors. It’s the right pick if you want a more upscale truck without going all the way to luxury territory.
• King Ranch: This trim leans into Western-themed luxury with saddle-leather upholstery, special stitching, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, heated rear seats, and a remote release tailgate. Choose it if you want a distinctive cabin and more premium features.
• Platinum: This trim adds chrome badging, body-color bumpers, LED bed lighting and fog lamps, power outlets, ambient lighting, and Multi-Contour Active Motion seats. It suits you if comfort and upscale touches matter more than rugged simplicity.
• Raptor: This is the off-road-focused model, with a wider body, flared fenders, a lifted suspension, Fox Racing Shox with live valve technology, skid plates, and specialized drive modes. Buy it if you want the most capable trail-oriented version.
• Limited: This is the top luxury trim, with 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, premium leather upholstery, a dual-panel moonroof, and satin aluminum exterior details. It’s the choice if you want the most comfort and the most upscale presentation.

Advanced safety features are not standard, so check carefully for the driver-assistance equipment you want on the specific truck you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford F-150?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 9,759 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.02% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $27,768, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $27,768 sits slightly below last year's $30,188.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, the current softness means condition, mileage, and equipment will matter even more when it’s time to list. Trucks with desirable trims and strong maintenance records should still draw attention, but you may need to price competitively.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew trucks received five-star ratings from NHTSA, while the SuperCab and regular cab earned four-star ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford makes pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking standard, including on the XL. Ford Co-Pilot360 can add automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The truck is also available with Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which helps simplify trailer maneuvering.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used truck you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances comfort, capability, and multiple powertrain options in a familiar full-size pickup package.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $25,800, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $27,768 average.
• It stayed current with modest updates and remains a proven, broadly useful pickup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $32,140, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,768 average.
• It adds a redesigned interior, more technology, and hybrid availability.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and capability, the 2020 is the sensible middle ground. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer redesign and are willing to pay more.
