Is the 2020 Ford Expedition a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Ford Expedition earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, luxurious feel, and powerful engine, and many also like its advanced features. The trade-offs are that it can feel pricey and some shoppers expected better gas mileage.

That lines up with the Expedition’s use case as a full-size SUV for families who need room for passengers, cargo, and heavier-duty tasks. With 36.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

The user feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because of its spaciousness and dependable-feeling powertrain. The expert review also describes the Expedition as a robust, capable SUV that can remain on the road for decades.

The ownership risk for used buyers is mainly tied to cost: if you plan to keep one long term, you should budget carefully for fuel and upkeep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Expedition?

At 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and technology still feel consistent with the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lower-level Expedition XLT is called out for having quite a bit of hard plastic, while the King Ranch adds 22-inch aluminum wheels, a mesh grille insert, LED headlights, exclusive gray-painted lower exterior trim, and special interior leather and branding.
• Powertrain: Every 2020 Expedition uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD is optional.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance.
• Infotainment: The Expedition uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, navigation, an available premium Bang & Olufsen sound system, rear-seat entertainment, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review says it averaged 17.7 mpg in testing, and the official EPA rating cited there is 19 mpg.

Which 2020 Ford Expedition trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford Expedition is offered in 2 trim levels: XLT, King Ranch.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point, and the review makes clear that it carries more hard plastic in the cabin than you may expect at this price. It makes sense if you want the Expedition’s core space, towing, and family-hauling ability without paying for the more upscale trim.
• King Ranch: This is the more luxurious choice, with 22-inch wheels, distinctive exterior trim, special leather, and adaptive damping suspension. It is the better pick if you want the most upscale version described here and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim to get Ford Co-Pilot360.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Expedition?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,435 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.11% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 73.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,383, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford Expedition's resale value?

The current average of $25,383 sits slightly below last year's $29,903.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the chance of taking a steep depreciation hit in the near term.

The Expedition’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers who need a large SUV with real utility. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford Expedition safe?

The 2020 Ford Expedition earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA test plus a four-star rollover resistance rating.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 comes standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance.

One caveat is that the IIHS had not tested the Expedition at the time of the review, so you do not get that additional crash-test perspective here.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong towing ability, spacious seating, and a standard driver-assistance suite.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $29,882, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $25,383 average.
• It remains a competitive alternative for buyers who want a similarly capable full-size SUV with broad everyday usefulness.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are lower and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who want to stay closer to the next generation of the same formula.
