CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Escape
overall

Summary
With 3,477 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,448.00, 31.8% of 2020 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Escape 4.42 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
75.4% of 2020 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Escape stands out as a small SUV that aims to deliver more than the basics. Ford describes it as raising the bar for the segment with impressive tech, performance, and cabin quality, and the available test-drive notes reinforce that it is meant to feel stylish and modern rather than merely practical. It also offers multiple powertrain options and standard advanced safety features, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want flexibility along with a strong equipment list.
That said, the 2020 Ford Escape is not without compromises. The main drawback called out in the test-drive data is that it does not offer much cargo space, so buyers who prioritize maximum utility may want to pay close attention to that limitation. Even so, its combination of design, technology, and safety content makes it a compelling choice for shoppers looking for a well-rounded compact SUV.

This model has all the safety features I’ve been looking for to drive safe and confident on the road! It’s also SO good on gas. The main reason I knew this was the one, was because it has all of this AND it was within my budget!!!

I love my new Ford Escape. It drives smoothly and the engine has zip. It is fully loaded and for a decent price. I also liked the Mazda CX-5, but I thought the Escape was a better value. Better engine and more features for a better price.

If you find a listing below $15,087.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Ford Escape earns a 4.42/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for used shoppers.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, numerous features, and safety technology. The review summary also highlights strong acceleration and comfort, which fits a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic.
On the downside, the expert notes point to limited cargo space, and owners mention space concerns for taller passengers, a noisy engine under acceleration, and mixed feelings about the gearshift design.
Given the overview’s focus on a stylish, modern compact SUV with multiple powertrain choices and strong safety content, it makes the most sense if you want a well-equipped commuter with flexibility rather than maximum utility.
With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels smooth, feature-rich, and safety-focused, and those are the kinds of traits that usually support confidence over time. It also suggests the Escape is a model many drivers feel good about living with day to day.
The expert notes reinforce that impression with a polished driving feel and a well-rounded equipment mix, which can matter when you’re judging how dependable a used SUV will feel after years of ownership. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest Ford built this Escape to feel like more than a basic commuter.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright simplicity and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right maintenance history and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a trim with more equipment. Focus on overall condition, especially cabin wear, electronics, and signs that the vehicle has been used hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S comes with 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, a 4.2-inch instrument-panel screen, manually adjustable front seats, and a 4.2-inch center screen, while the SE adds 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, automatic climate control, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and an 8-inch Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. CarGurus recommends the SE because it adds the most useful everyday equipment for the money.
- Powertrain: You can choose from four engine options, including a 3-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, and hybrid setups that make 198 horsepower. The conventional engines use an 8-speed automatic, while the hybrids use a CVT.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. The base trim still gets the full suite of driver-assistance features.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 4.2-inch screen, while the SE upgrades to an 8-inch Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The tech setup is a major reason the SE stands out as the value pick.
- Fuel efficiency: The non-Sport hybrid returns 44 mpg city, 37 highway, 41 combined. The SE Sport returns 43/37/40. The 1.5-liter turbo engine returns 27/33/30 combined, and with AWD it returns 26/31/26. The 2.0-liter turbo with AWD returns 23/31/26.
Which 2020 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Escape is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE Sport, SEL, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it feels stripped down with the small 4.2-inch screen and basic cabin hardware. You should only consider it if price matters more than convenience features.
- SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 8-inch Sync 3 screen, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat. It gives you the most useful upgrades without pushing the price too high.
- SE Sport: This trim adds a hybrid drivetrain and a more distinctive appearance, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It makes sense if you want efficiency and a more upscale-feeling interior.
- SEL: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, including fog lamps, black roof racks, a hands-free power liftgate, memory for the driver’s seat, synthetic upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and one-touch windows all around. It suits you if you want a more premium daily driver.
- Titanium: This is the most upscale version, with 19-inch wheels, LED fog lamps, acoustic-laminated glass, a dual-panel moonroof, wood trim, two-tone leather, B&O audio, and a 6-way power front passenger seat. Choose it if you want the most luxury-oriented Escape.
The standard safety suite is a strong point across the lineup, so even lower trims give you a lot of protection equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Escape?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,581 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,087.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $15,438 sits slightly below last year's $16,835.
That price movement suggests the Escape has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means the market is currently valuing this model year more conservatively than it did a year ago.
If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned to limit further value loss. Trims with the strongest feature mix and the broadest buyer appeal should be easier to move later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape safe?
It earns the best overall score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in all phases of testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. That gives you a strong standard safety package even before you move up the trim ladder.
The Escape also comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 redesign brought a more modern cabin, stronger tech, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $16,344, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,438 average.
- It carries over the redesign with only minimal changes.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it already reflects the redesigned Escape and now sits at a lower average price. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer model with similar fundamentals, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative, but price-sensitive shoppers should focus on the 2020.
