overall

Summary
With 3,603 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,421, 31.4% of 2020 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Escape 4.42 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
75.2% of 2020 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Escape stands out as a small SUV that aims to deliver more than the basics. Ford describes it as raising the bar for the segment with impressive tech, performance, and cabin quality, and the available powertrain variety gives it broad appeal. It also brings a stylish design and standard advanced safety features, which help make it feel more polished and well-equipped than a typical compact crossover.
That said, the 2020 Ford Escape is not without compromises. The main drawback called out in the test-drive data is that it does not offer much cargo space, so buyers who prioritize maximum utility may want to take that into account. Even so, its mix of comfort, features, and safety technology makes it an appealing choice for shoppers who want a small SUV that feels modern and easy to live with.

This model has all the safety features I’ve been looking for to drive safe and confident on the road! It’s also SO good on gas. The main reason I knew this was the one, was because it has all of this AND it was within my budget!!!

I love my new Ford Escape. It drives smoothly and the engine has zip. It is fully loaded and for a decent price. I also liked the Mazda CX-5, but I thought the Escape was a better value. Better engine and more features for a better price.

How much does the 2020 Ford Escape cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,369 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,087 |
| Year-Round High | $16,761 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,760 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.30% |
Prices have softened 8.30% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,640 listings available, which gives you a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Ford Escape earns a 4.42/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, numerous features, and safety technology, and many also like its acceleration and comfort. The trade-offs are space for taller occupants, a noisy engine under acceleration, and some mixed feedback on the gearshift design and wireless charging compatibility.
That lines up with the overview: you get a small SUV that aims to feel modern, polished, and well-equipped, but you give up some utility if maximum cargo space matters most. With 31.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with strong satisfaction around comfort, features, and safety technology. The expert test-drive notes also frame it as a vehicle that elevates the small-SUV experience with quality and performance that make it feel more substantial than a basic commuter.
Ford also gives you a broad powertrain lineup, which can help you choose the setup that best fits your driving needs and long-term expectations. If you want to minimize ownership risk, focus on maintenance history, drivetrain condition, and whether the vehicle has been used in a way that matches its equipment level.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, title status, and service records before you get too far into the process. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the cabin, electronics, and drivetrain, since the model’s appeal depends heavily on features and everyday usability. You should also pay close attention to space, seat comfort, and how the vehicle has held up under regular commuting use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim has a 4.2-inch instrument-panel screen, a 4.2-inch center screen, manually adjustable front seats, and steel wheels, while the SE adds an 8-inch Sync 3 screen, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat. CarGurus recommends the SE as the best-value choice.
- Powertrain: The Escape offers four engine options, including a 180-horsepower 3-cylinder, a 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 198-horsepower hybrid setup, and a plug-in hybrid variant. The hybrid is the most efficient version, and the turbo engine brings the strongest acceleration.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. The base trim still gets the full suite.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 4.2-inch screen, while the SE upgrades to an 8-inch Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports an over-the-air update for CarPlay functionality.
- Fuel efficiency: The non-Sport hybrid returns 44 mpg city, 37 highway, 41 combined. The SE Sport returns 43/37/40. The 1.5-liter turbo engine returns 27/33/30 combined, 26/31/26 with AWD, and the 2.0-liter turbo with AWD returns 23/31/26.
Which 2020 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Escape is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE Sport, SEL, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it feels stripped down with the small screens and basic interior equipment. It still gives you the full safety suite, so it works if you want the lowest price and can live without the nicer tech and comfort upgrades.
- SE: This is the best-value trim. You get the 8-inch Sync 3 screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat, which makes it the smartest buy for most shoppers.
- SE Sport: This trim adds a hybrid drivetrain plus sportier visual touches and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. It makes sense if you want efficiency with a more distinctive look.
- SEL: This trim adds more convenience and comfort, including fog lamps, roof racks, a hands-free liftgate, memory seating, a heated steering wheel, and upgraded upholstery. It suits you if you want a more premium daily driver.
- Titanium: This is the most upscale version, with larger wheels, premium audio, leather seating, a dual-panel moonroof, and quieter cabin touches. It’s the right pick if you want the most features and don’t mind paying more.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, so even the base trim gets the core safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Escape?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,640 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $15,369 sits slightly below last year's $16,760.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of further depreciation. The model’s broad appeal and feature-rich setup should help it stay relevant with used shoppers, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape safe?
The 2020 Ford Escape earned the best overall score of Good from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in all phases of testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. The base trim still gets the full suite, so you do not need to move up the lineup to get the core safety tech.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a redesigned cabin, broad powertrain choice, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $16,327, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,369 average.
- It adds new appearance packages, exterior colors, an available tow package, and slightly better base-engine fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the stronger buy because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer model with a few incremental updates, the 2021 is the secondary path for shoppers who care more about freshness than price.
