CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford EcoSport

Summary
With 1,230 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,584, 31.8% of 2020 Ford EcoSport listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford EcoSport 4.64 / 5 stars.
71.7% of 2020 Ford EcoSport listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford EcoSport stands out as a compact, budget-minded subcompact SUV that was designed to be easy to live with in the city. It is small enough to park and maneuver easily, yet it still offers generous cargo space for its size and a best-in-class towing rating. Ford also gave it available all-wheel drive, which helps broaden its appeal for buyers who want an affordable, no-fuss utility vehicle rather than something flashy or especially sporty.
For 2020, the EcoSport’s appeal is more about practicality than performance. The available 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder made 123 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque and was front-wheel drive only, while the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder made 166 hp and 149 lb-ft and was available only with all-wheel drive. Neither engine is quick, and the EcoSport was among the slowest vehicles in its class regardless of engine choice. The model also had a few useful touches, including an available cooled glovebox, and the SE trim added heated front seats, a power moonroof, an upgraded touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available blind-spot monitors.
There are tradeoffs to consider, though. The EcoSport’s side-hinged rear cargo door can be awkward in tight parking spots, and the cabin is not especially spacious. The 2020 model also lacked modern driver-assistance features such as automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, even though blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors were available. Owners tend to appreciate its compact size and comfort features, but some note a choppy ride and limited power in certain situations.

The 2020 Ford EcoSport is a great compact SUV with excellent fuel efficiency, easy handling, and a comfortable ride for daily driving. It’s a good value for anyone looking for an affordable, reliable small SUV with modern features. The interior space is surprisingly practical for its size, and the technology is user-friendly. It’s not the most powerful SUV in its class, but it gets the job done for city and family use. I would compare it to the Honda HR-V and Chevrolet Trax, and the EcoSport offers great value overall

There is a lot to love about the SES trim, with the 2l, 4cylinder engine and 4x4 configuration. Great tech, stylish body lines, very agile, and exceedingly reliable. The only places it loses points is that the power is a little lacking for its class (although plenty for anybody prone to picking one up). The un-reconfigured cargo space is pretty limited, but this is almost completely cured by dropping the back seats and setting the cargo panel on the installed shelf tabs. Although the front has exceptional space, the rear seats are a bit cramped. Overall, this is a pretty great car, and Ford could have made a couple minor modifications and not discontinued it, and it would have been a great car. It came SO close to a 5-star rating from me.

Disappointed in the mpg - for a 2020, I expected better. However, it IS all-wheel drive and I live in Michigan. Has the SUV feel without the bulk of size.

Is the 2020 Ford EcoSport a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford EcoSport earns a 4.64/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners commonly praise its compact size, fun driving experience, and good fuel efficiency. They also like the comfort and features available on the SES trim. For city driving and everyday errands, its easy-to-park footprint and practical setup fit the EcoSport’s budget-minded, no-fuss mission well.
With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2020 Ford EcoSport reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with appreciation for its compact size and practical nature. That said, some owners mention a choppy ride and limited power in certain situations, so the long-term ownership picture is best approached with realistic expectations about performance and comfort.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a poorly maintained example that amplifies the model’s already modest driving refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford EcoSport?
At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should get priority, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus closely on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of past repairs so you can separate a clean, well-kept SUV from one with hidden issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford EcoSport?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,227 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,583, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford EcoSport's resale value?
The current average of $12,583 sits slightly below last year's $13,999.
That decline suggests the EcoSport has softened in the used market, which can make it easier for you to buy but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the current pricing trend points to a market that is still adjusting downward rather than holding firm. If you buy carefully and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect value better than the broader trend suggests.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford EcoSport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 EcoSport makes the most sense if you want a budget-friendly, city-friendly SUV and you find a clean example at a strong price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal availability make this a reasonable year to shop carefully. If you want the best balance of confidence and value, prioritize condition and history over chasing the lowest sticker price.
