CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Dodge Challenger

Summary
With 211 currently listed for sale near Virginia Beach, VA and an average price of $31,245.00, 38.4% of 2020 Dodge Challengers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Dodge Challenger 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
78.2% of 2020 Challenger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Dodge Challenger stands out by blending retro styling with modern technology and heart-pounding performance. It is also one of the last remaining modern muscle cars, and that old-school character gives it a distinct place in the market. For buyers who want a coupe that feels different from the usual sporty formula, the Challenger’s appeal is straightforward: it trades on the past while still using current automotive technology to deliver a fun-loving driving experience.
For 2020, the Challenger is largely unchanged, but it does gain several new colors, some additional interior design choices, and a 50th Anniversary package for some trims. Its strengths include a spacious interior, powerful engine choices, and easy-to-use technology. The main drawbacks are that advanced safety features are not standard and its styling may be polarizing, so it is best suited to shoppers who value character and performance as much as everyday usability.

I have to say the Dodge Challenger Widebody Scat Pack is an exciting car all around. It is a heavy, solid old school style MUSCLE CAR in all the good ways...spacious cabin with nice visibility, comfortable seats, all the very (easily) usable bells and whistles you could want and a huge trunk. Lots of engine gives it more than plenty of grunt and I am getting 18mpg all around driving. Solid build, great performance with no issues at all. I couldnt be happier with the value and how the car makes me feel. Very highly recommended!

Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Dodge Challenger earns a 4.85/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish looks, and comfortable ride. They also like the handling and responsiveness of the engine, along with the spacious interior and unique design.
The main trade-offs are that advanced safety features are not standard and the styling may be polarizing. That makes it a strong fit if you want a coupe with character, everyday usability, and a clear performance focus.
With 25.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as powerful, comfortable, and enjoyable to live with, and they repeatedly highlight the engine response and the sense of confidence that comes with the car’s performance. The ownership feedback also points to a car that feels distinctive and satisfying over time.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Challenger delivers its performance in a way that feels straightforward and effective, with modern technology supporting the driving experience. On the cost side, the most efficient V6 setup helps keep running costs more manageable than the V8 models.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher-performance versions can bring higher fuel costs and more expensive upkeep.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?
At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-performance trim or a car with a lot of modifications. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim level you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SXT starts with 18-inch aluminum wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The GT adds 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and unique houndstooth cloth seats. The R/T adds a V8 and performance upgrades, while the R/T Scat Pack adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen.
- Powertrain: The SXT and GT use a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, with rear-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The R/T uses a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, the R/T Scat Pack steps up to a 6.4-liter Hemi V8, and Hellcat models move to supercharged 6.2-liter V8 power.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also available.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The available Uconnect 8.4 adds a larger screen and Garmin-based navigation with real-time traffic updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The base V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 30 highway, 23 combined. The V6 with AWD returns 18 mpg city, 27 highway, 21 combined. The 5.7-liter V8 with the 8-speed automatic returns 16 mpg city, 25 highway, 19 combined. The SRT Hellcat Redeye returns 13 mpg city, 21 highway, 15 combined.
Which 2020 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?
The 2020 Dodge Challenger is offered in 9 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Scat Pack Widebody, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Hellcat Redeye, and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s style and standard tech at the lowest price. It gives you the core cabin and infotainment setup, and it makes the most sense if you want the look and feel without paying for V8 power.
- GT: This is the best-value trim if you want more visual presence and a richer feature set without jumping to a V8. The larger wheels, hood scoop, remote start, and upgraded steering wheel make it feel more complete.
- R/T: Choose this if you want the V8 experience and a stronger performance identity. It adds the 5.7-liter Hemi and performance upgrades, making it the right step up if power matters more than keeping costs down.
- R/T Scat Pack: This is the sweet spot for buyers who want the strongest performance-for-the-dollar. It adds the 6.4-liter Hemi, Brembo brakes, launch control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen.
- R/T Scat Pack Widebody: Pick this if you want the Scat Pack formula with a wider stance and more cornering confidence. The flared fenders, wider tires, and wider track make it the more serious handling-focused choice.
- SRT Hellcat: This is for you if straight-line speed is the priority and you want supercharged V8 power. It brings a major jump in performance and a more extreme personality.
- SRT Hellcat Widebody: Choose this if you want Hellcat power with the added grip and stance of the Widebody setup. It suits buyers who want the most planted version of the high-power formula.
- SRT Hellcat Redeye: This is the most extreme power choice in the lineup, with even more output than the standard Hellcat. It is best for buyers who want maximum acceleration and are comfortable with the highest running costs.
- SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody: Pick this if you want the Redeye’s top-end power with the Widebody’s broader footprint and added composure.
The safety package is optional rather than standard, so make sure the car you are considering has the driver-assistance features you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,077 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,635.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Dodge Challenger's resale value?
The current average of $29,457 sits slightly below last year's $30,602.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future sellers may face a market that is still adjusting downward. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who pays near the top of the range.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger safe?
The Challenger earns a four-star rating in front driver’s side crash testing from NHTSA, five-star ratings for front passenger side testing, and four-star ratings for rollover testing. It also earns a “Good” result in many IIHS crash-test phases, though its overall IIHS score is “Marginal.”
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, and other available features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing.
The main caution is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used example you are considering.
Should I buy a 2020 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the Challenger’s retro style, strong performance, and updated tech in a largely unchanged package.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,285, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $29,457 average.
- It leans harder into straight-line speed and high-tech dragster character.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it delivers the Challenger formula at a lower average price and with softer market pricing. If you are willing to spend more for a newer-year alternative and want the next model year’s sharper performance focus, the 2021 is the path to consider.
