Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Dodge Challenger earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish looks, and comfortable ride. They also highlight the spacious interior and unique design, which fit the Challenger’s retro-muscle personality well.

The main trade-offs are that advanced safety features are not standard and the styling can be polarizing. For you, that means the Challenger makes the most sense if you want a coupe with character, strong straight-line appeal, and a more distinctive presence than a mainstream daily driver.

With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as powerful, comfortable, and distinctive, and they repeatedly point to the engine’s responsiveness and the car’s overall dependability. The owner feedback also suggests you can count on it for a satisfying long-term ownership experience if you value its core strengths.

The expert review also emphasizes that the Challenger combines current automotive technology with a proven muscle-car formula, which supports its reputation for durable appeal. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that fuel costs and feature expectations may not line up with the car’s performance-first mission.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?

At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a car like this, since condition can vary a lot depending on how it was driven and maintained. Pay close attention to wear items, interior condition, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SXT includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The GT adds 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and unique houndstooth cloth seats. The R/T adds a V8 engine and performance upgrades, while the R/T Scat Pack adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen.
• Powertrain: The SXT and GT use a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, with rear-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The R/T uses a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, and the R/T Scat Pack upgrades to a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 485 hp and 475 lb-ft. Higher-performance trims add even more power, but fuel economy drops as output rises.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also optional.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The available Uconnect 8.4 adds a larger screen and Garmin-based navigation with real-time traffic updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The base V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 30 highway, 23 combined. The V6 with AWD returns 18 mpg city, 27 highway, 21 combined. The most efficient V8 version returns 16 mpg city, 25 highway, 19 combined.

Which 2020 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2020 Dodge Challenger is offered in 9 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Scat Pack Widebody, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Hellcat Redeye, and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Challenger’s core style plus the standard 7-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the look and basic comfort without paying for extra performance hardware.
• GT: This adds 20-inch wheels, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a more distinctive appearance. It’s a good value if you want a nicer-feeling daily driver with the Challenger’s personality.
• R/T: This is the first trim that brings the V8 experience, along with performance upgrades and an active exhaust system. If you care most about the classic muscle-car feel, this is the trim that best captures it.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is the best-value performance choice because it adds the 6.4-liter V8, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. It’s the sweet spot if you want serious speed without jumping to the highest-priced models.
• R/T Scat Pack Widebody: Choose this if you want the Scat Pack’s performance with a wider stance, wider tires, and a wider track. It’s the more focused option for buyers who want sharper cornering confidence.
• SRT Hellcat: This trim is for you if outright power matters more than value, with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 and the most dramatic acceleration in the lineup. It’s a serious step up in price and performance.
• SRT Hellcat Widebody: This adds the wider bodywork and wider tires to the Hellcat formula. It suits buyers who want maximum presence and a more planted feel.
• SRT Hellcat Redeye: This is the extreme power choice, with even more output than the standard Hellcat and an automatic transmission only. It’s for buyers who want the most aggressive straight-line performance.
• SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody: This is the top-end version, combining the Redeye’s power with the Widebody setup. It’s the most specialized choice if you want the full flagship experience.

The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, and other safety features remain optional rather than standard.

What is the 2020 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $28,237 sits slightly below last year's $29,856.

That softer pricing suggests the Challenger has become a bit more buyer-friendly in the used market, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, the current trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, but the model’s strong enthusiast appeal can help support demand. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, the Challenger’s distinctive identity should remain a selling point.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2020 Dodge Challenger earns a Marginal overall score from IIHS and four-star ratings in front driver’s side crash testing and rollover, plus five-star ratings for front passenger side testing from NHTSA.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also available.

The key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should pay close attention to which options are fitted on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Challenger’s retro styling, modern tech, and strong performance focus.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $31,481, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $28,237 average.
• It leans harder into straight-line speed and high-tech performance.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines strong enthusiast appeal with softer pricing. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year and can accept a higher average price, the 2021 is the better path for buyers prioritizing the latest iteration of the Challenger formula.
