Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Dodge Challenger earns 4.85/5 from owners and 8.00/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish looks, and comfortable ride. The user feedback also points to strong handling and responsiveness, especially with the Hemi engines, along with a spacious interior and a distinctive design.

The trade-offs are fuel costs, back seat space, and a few missing convenience features that some owners wanted. For you, that means the Challenger makes the most sense if you want a coupe with personality, usable cabin space, and serious straight-line appeal rather than maximum practicality.

Good and great deals account for 28.9% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that owners feel good about living with over time, with praise centered on performance they can count on, a comfortable ride, and a design that continues to satisfy after purchase. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Challenger delivers modern technology in a way that remains straightforward and dependable to use.

Its easy-to-use Uconnect system and conventional controls support low-stress ownership, and the car’s broad powertrain lineup gives you options without making the experience feel complicated. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that upkeep and operating costs can be higher than average, especially on the more powerful versions.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?

At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, tires, brakes, and interior wear. Because this car can be bought in many performance-oriented configurations, it also pays to confirm that the equipment on the car matches the trim and that any modifications were done cleanly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SXT starts with 18-inch aluminum wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The GT adds 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and unique houndstooth cloth seats. The R/T adds a V8 and performance upgrades, while the R/T Scat Pack adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. The GT and R/T also can be had with a 50th Anniversary package.
• Powertrain: The SXT and GT use a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, and they are the only trims with available AWD. The R/T uses a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, the R/T Scat Pack steps up to a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 485 hp and 475 lb-ft, and the Hellcat and Hellcat Redeye bring supercharged V8 power for buyers who want maximum performance.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also optional.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The available Uconnect 8.4 adds a larger screen and Garmin-based navigation with real-time traffic updates. R/T Scat Pack, Hellcat, and Hellcat Redeye trims also include an Alpine premium stereo with a 276-watt digital amplifier.
• Fuel efficiency: The base V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 30 highway, 23 combined. The V6 with AWD returns 18 mpg city, 27 highway, 21 combined. The 5.7-liter V8 with the 8-speed automatic returns 16 mpg city, 25 highway, 19 combined. The least-efficient variant returns 13 mpg city, 21 highway, 15 combined.

Which 2020 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2020 Dodge Challenger is offered in 9 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Scat Pack Widebody, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Hellcat Redeye, and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the Challenger’s core appeal with a 7-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the look and space of the car at the lowest starting price.
• GT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds 20-inch wheels, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and the option of AWD. If you want a more polished daily driver without jumping into V8 pricing, this is the trim to focus on.
• R/T: This is the first V8 trim, and it adds the performance character many shoppers want from a Challenger. It suits you if engine sound and stronger acceleration matter more than keeping costs down.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is the performance-for-the-dollar sweet spot, with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. It is the trim to buy if you want the strongest mix of equipment and muscle-car punch.
• R/T Scat Pack Widebody: This version adds flared fenders, wider tires, and a wider track for a more aggressive stance and sharper cornering confidence. It fits you if you want the Scat Pack formula with a more serious chassis setup.
• SRT Hellcat: This trim is for buyers who want supercharged V8 power and the full high-performance experience. It is a big step up in price and intensity, so it makes sense only if maximum output is the priority.
• SRT Hellcat Widebody: This adds the wider-body treatment and the benefits that come with it, including a more planted feel. Choose it if you want Hellcat power with a more capable stance.
• SRT Hellcat Redeye: This is the extreme-power choice, with even more output than the standard Hellcat and an automatic transmission only. It is for you if outright acceleration matters more than anything else.
• SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody: This is the most aggressive version in the lineup, combining the Redeye’s output with the Widebody’s broader footprint. It is the top pick only if you want the most serious Challenger available.

The Challenger’s safety equipment is mostly optional rather than standard, so check carefully for the technology group and other driver-assistance features on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,079 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.42% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $27,607, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $28,956 sits slightly below last year's $30,615.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price competitively. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s average.

The Challenger’s broad appeal helps support demand, especially for trims with strong equipment and desirable performance features. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones, but condition and trim will matter a lot when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger safe?

The Challenger earns Good results in many IIHS crash-test phases and a Marginal overall score. It earns four-star ratings in front driver’s side crash testing and rollover testing, and five-star ratings for front passenger side testing from NHTSA.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also available.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify which driver-assistance items are actually installed on any used Challenger you consider.

Should I buy a 2020 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds new colors, extra interior choices, and a 50th Anniversary package for some trims.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $31,589, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $28,956 average.
• It leans even harder into straight-line speed and high-tech dragster character.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and broad trim choice. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer model year and want the next year’s sharper performance focus, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
