CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Chevrolet Equinox
overall

Summary
With 329 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $15,321.00, 29.5% of 2020 Chevrolet Equinoxes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox 4.24 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
84.8% of 2020 Equinox models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a straightforward compact crossover built to make everyday driving easier rather than more exciting. It serves buyers who want more foul-weather capability, more cargo space, and a higher driving position than a Malibu midsize sedan can provide, and it comes in L, LS, LT, and Premier trim levels. For 2020, Chevrolet also added a Midnight Edition appearance package for LT trim and three new colors.
What stands out most about the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is how well it covers the basics. The standard advanced safety features and easy-to-use technology make it appealing as a practical daily driver, and owners often praise its comfort, fuel economy, and value for money. At the same time, it is not the choice for shoppers seeking excitement: the test-drive data calls out fairly pedestrian performance and poor value for money, and owner feedback also points to limited standard equipment on lower trims, a cheap-feeling interior, and power concerns.

This car is just the right size for me! It’s a great value for the money. I purchased one with very low mileage. It’s an LT, All Wheel Drive, 2.0 liter engine, 9 speed transmission, and a Factory Trailer Hitch. So far it’s giving me over 33 miles per gallon highway and over 26 mpg in the city. The ride is soft but firm. I have plenty of room to haul things with the back seats folded down! I like this car a lot, and would buy it again!

1. Remote start on the key fob doesn’t work 2. Tires sensors are not functional 3. The hood keeps flapping at 70mph 4. Engine light is on 5. Traction light is on 6. Tires low pressure lights are on 7. Change oil light is on 8. Hydraulic and wiper tanks cannot hold fluid That vehicle is not safe to drive, not road worthy and I will be surprised if it passes inspection

I got this car less than a week ago. I got the premium 2.0 model with the panoramic roof and ventilated seats. The features are very good, I got the 2 tone leather interior which is also very sharp. The 2.0 turbo engine feels as good as if not more powerful than my V6 in my Jeep Cherokee I had prior. There is a ton of space in this vehicle for this size category. It runs quiet and smooth, the cabin is quiet also. It seems to be going through gas quickly so the verdict is out on gas mileage. The electric seats give endless settings, however I havent been able to find my comfortable spot yet for some reason. This car had better reliability ratings than other vehicles I looked at and offered a lot of features you would see in a Lincoln or higher end car for the money.

How much does the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,732 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,534.22 |
| Year-Round High | $17,057.29 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,056 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.76% |
Prices have softened 7.76% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 5,925 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $15,534.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox earns a 4.24/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, fuel economy, and value for money, and they also like the good feature content for the price. The practical, easy-to-use tech and standard safety equipment fit the Equinox’s role as a straightforward daily driver.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out fairly pedestrian performance and poor value for money, while owner feedback points to limited standard equipment on lower trims and a cheap-feeling interior. That makes it a better fit if you want an easygoing compact crossover rather than something engaging or upscale.
For you, the appeal is strongest if you want a practical commuter with a higher seating position, more cargo space, and foul-weather capability than a sedan. 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox reliable?
Owners rate it 4.24/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a generally satisfying, dependable ownership experience, with comfort and value showing up as recurring positives. The expert review also describes the Equinox as easy to live with, and Chevrolet includes a free first maintenance visit to the dealership.
That said, used buyers should still watch for signs of wear, because long-term ownership risk is tied more to condition and maintenance history than to the model’s basic appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Chevrolet Equinox?
At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L, LS, LT, and Premier trims span the lineup, and the lower trims are where you’re most likely to feel the lack of standard equipment. The Premier looks and feels more upscale, but the cabin still uses a lot of hard and shiny plastic.
- Powertrain: The standard 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder makes 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The 2.0-liter is the better choice if you want stronger acceleration or the maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.
- Safety package: Chevy Safety Assist is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, a safe following distance monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and related upgrades depend on trim level.
- Infotainment: Touchscreens measure 7 inches or 8 inches, and every system includes Bluetooth for two devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and Chevrolet Connected Access services. Higher trims add a high-definition display, cloud connectivity, improved voice recognition, HD Radio, satellite radio, navigation, and a Bose premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.5-liter turbo AWD version averaged 24.3 mpg in testing, while the 2.0-liter turbo version averaged 22.1 mpg. The 1.5-liter is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, and the 2.0-liter is rated at 24 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2020 Chevrolet Equinox trim should I buy?
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LS, LT, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the most basic way into the Equinox, so it makes sense only if you’re focused on price and can live with the leanest equipment list.
- LS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the Equinox’s core strengths intact while adding a more usable everyday setup than the base model.
- LT: This is the trim to consider if you want a better balance of equipment and value, and it’s also the one that can get the Midnight Edition appearance package.
- Premier: This is the most upscale version, with the strongest visual presence, more available equipment, and the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine for buyers who want more power.
Chevy Safety Assist is standard across the lineup, but some driver-assistance upgrades still depend on trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Chevrolet Equinox?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,925 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,534.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox's resale value?
The current average of $15,732 sits slightly below last year's $17,056.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. If you plan to resell later, the current softness means your upside may depend more on buying well than on expecting appreciation.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.24/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox safe?
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2020 Equinox is a Top Safety Pick. In tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2020 Equinox earns five-star ratings in each evaluation, plus a four-star rating for rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevy Safety Assist is standard on every 2020 Equinox, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, a safe following distance monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights. A reversing camera, rear-seat reminder, and Teen Driver technology are also standard.
Some useful safety upgrades still depend on trim level, including adaptive cruise control, lane change warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, and a Safety Alert Seat. Chevy also notes that blind-spot warning should be more accessible.
Should I buy a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.24/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for standard advanced safety features and easy-to-use technology.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $14,372, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $15,732 average.
- It adds HD rear-view and surround-view cameras plus an updated infotainment system.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the stronger safety and tech package at a still-soft market price. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2019 is the better value play, especially if you find one in clean condition with the visibility upgrades intact.
