The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover much like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-3. For 2020, it receives a few light updates. Previously, the Encore had a premium engine option, but Buick eliminated it for 2020. The only engine available is a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, making 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission powers either the front or all four wheels. The Encore’s fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg city, 30 highway and 27 combined with front-wheel drive (FWD) or 24/29/26 with all-wheel drive (AWD). The Encore spreads its options across four trims: 1SV, Preferred, Sport Touring, and Essence. The base 1SV includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a laminated windshield, partial-LED taillights, keyless access and start, an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Siri EyesFree, satellite radio, and a 6-speaker audio system. The other trims add upgrades like fog lights, remote start, leather upholstery, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel. As far as safety, the Encore’s only standard technology includes a reversing camera. You’ll need to ascend the trim and options ladder to get forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. The Encore received decent scores in its Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Encore boasts handsome styling and a competitive set of features.
