The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover much like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-3. For 2020, it receives a few light updates.
Previously, the Encore had a premium engine option, but Buick eliminated it for 2020. The only engine available is a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, making 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission powers either the front or all four wheels. The Encore’s fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg city, 30 highway and 27 combined with front-wheel drive (FWD) or 24/29/26 with all-wheel drive (AWD).
The Encore spreads its options across four trims: 1SV, Preferred, Sport Touring, and Essence. The base 1SV includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a laminated windshield, partial-LED taillights, keyless access and start, an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Siri EyesFree, satellite radio, and a 6-speaker audio system. The other trims add upgrades like fog lights, remote start, leather upholstery, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel.
As far as safety, the Encore’s only standard technology includes a reversing camera. You’ll need to ascend the trim and options ladder to get forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. The Encore received decent scores in its Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Encore boasts handsome styling and a competitive set of features.

I love all the features of the GX Essence. The colors are too blah for me. I would like to see more style to the car. Compares to the Chevy Trax but the Buick has many more options. May 01, 2024

Courtesy Ford had the vehicle after it 1st showed up on cargurus.com. It being services and I was told it only needed airbags. After they ran my credit they claimed they had to put a transmission part, breaks, airbags and there may have been 1 other part needed. They added an additional 1500 to the price. I told them from the beginning if it was gonna be much more than the asking price of around 7965 that it was gonna be too much. It ended up being around 10000 plus dollars. I told them my price to purchase was around 8000. Now I’ve got a hard pull and was denied. I wouldn’t have wanted the car with all those extra needed repairs if I would have known prior to them pulling my credit.Apr 12, 2024

Car features are great, except there’s no car starter for this vehicle, and there are no heated seats, which are great to have in the winter time. I really love my encore. It was a very good value with low mileage. But a car starter and heated seats are very necessary. It rides, very smooth, a slight step down from a Cadillac.Aug 29, 2023

I leased two 2020 Encore Preferred models—one for me, the other for my college-aged daughter. Sadly, she crashed hers within two years, rendering it a total loss. The accident was severe; she escaped with a fractured nose from the airbag deployment. That card has 21K miles and was flawless and never in the shop. Im still driving mine, although the lease is almost up; I have 43K miles and an excellent vehicle with no issues. I loved the spunky engine; the mpg is in the high 30s and gives a surprisingly smooth ride. I have ZERO complaints about this car and would buy another one, except Im now in the market for a pickup. These are genuinely great cars, and I highly recommend them. May 20, 2023

The Encore that we tried out was loaded with options and had some nice features. The car is missing a power hatch. I thought,why not put that on and then it would be loaded with options. I cannot compare it with a different model since that is the only car we tried. As far as value, I think it could be better.May 24, 2020
