CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW M2

Summary
With 88 currently listed for sale and an average price of $59,660.00, 43.2% of 2020 BMW M2s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW M2 5 / 5 stars.
78.4% of 2020 M2 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW M2 stands out as a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that was built around driving enjoyment first. By 2020, the first-generation M2 had already gained the sharper Competition treatment, including a turbocharged engine rated at 405 hp and 406 lb-ft, along with a stiffer chassis, retuned suspension and electronic driver aids, larger brakes, refreshed exterior bodywork, and newly optional M Sport seats with more side bolstering. That combination gives the car a more serious performance character than a basic coupe, while still keeping the M2’s approachable size and enthusiast-friendly layout.
It also offers the kind of equipment that makes it appealing as a daily driver. The cabin includes an 8.8-inch infotainment screen, and BMW added Apple CarPlay as an option in 2017, while an updated iDrive infotainment system could be operated with a touchscreen display for 2018. The M2’s standard six-speed manual transmission or optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, along with its rear-wheel-drive chassis, helped make it a favorite for enthusiasts looking for daily-driving fun. Buyers should also be aware that the ride is stiff in normal driving and that the styling is not for everyone, but those traits are part of the car’s focused personality rather than accidental flaws.

Aside from the aftermarket spoiler that was put on this car (just not my taste), the M2 was made for people who love to drive. Even without the manual gearbox, it checks almost every other box youd want in a great driving experience. Steering lacks a little bit of feel, but other than that its hard to beat the throttle response and sonorous music coming from under the hood.

The 2020 M2 Competition replaces my 2017 M2 that was totaled. Love the S55 power, and I have always loved the M-DCT; its so much fun to drive!

Is the 2020 BMW M2 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 BMW M2 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. The overview describes it as a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe built around driving enjoyment first, with a sharper Competition setup, a turbocharged engine, stiffer chassis tuning, retuned suspension, larger brakes, and refreshed bodywork. It also has the kind of equipment that can make it workable as a daily driver, including an 8.8-inch infotainment screen and available Apple CarPlay, while still keeping the enthusiast-focused layout that defines the model.
For you, that means the M2 makes the most sense if you want a small, serious performance coupe that still has enough everyday usability to live with. 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 BMW M2 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview points to a car that was engineered with a focused performance setup, including a stiffer chassis, retuned suspension, electronic driver aids, and larger brakes. That kind of hardware can be durable when maintained properly, but it also means you should expect a more specialized ownership experience than you would from a mainstream coupe.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying for a performance car that may have been driven hard, so condition and maintenance history matter more than mileage alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW M2?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report to confirm accident status, title history, and service records. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the suspension, brakes, tires, and signs of hard use, since this model is built around performance. Pay close attention to overall condition, because a car like this can vary a lot depending on how carefully it was maintained and driven.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW M2?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 90 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.21% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $55,075.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW M2's resale value?
The current average of $60,279 sits slightly below last year's $67,134.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. Strong condition and clean history should matter a lot when it comes time to resell, especially in a niche performance coupe market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW M2 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- It leans even harder into a track-focused, enthusiast-first personality.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the better path if you want a strong mix of performance, usability, and current market value. If you are price-sensitive, the 2020’s softer pricing and available deal inventory make it the more practical buy; if you want the next year’s more intense personality, the 2021 is worth a look.
