overall

Summary
With 1,463 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,717, 35.1% of 2020 BMW 3 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 3 Series 4.14 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
69.2% of 2020 BMW 3 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sedan built for drivers who care about how a car feels on the road. BMW’s own summary says the arrival of the 2020 BMW M340i reinforces the brand’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” claim, and the test-drive notes back that up with a clear emphasis on driving enjoyment. It is also described as comfortable, which gives it broader appeal than a car that is only about performance.
At the same time, the 2020 BMW 3 Series is not presented as an easy recommendation for everyone. The design is described as potentially polarizing, and value is called out as a weakness. Even so, the combination of a fun driving character, a powerful engine, and comfort makes it a compelling choice for buyers who want a premium sedan that prioritizes the driving experience.

I have test driven only the M 340. It is excellent. I am currently driving an M240 convertible and if I was not a lover of the open sky would definitely trade this in. The power delivery is excellent and the interior is well appointed. I love the tactile feel. The steering wheel is a nice touch. The only criticism is that getting into the back can be a bit of a chore if you are over 6 feet.

How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,691 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,605 |
| Year-Round High | $25,788 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,668 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.70% |
Prices have softened 7.70% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,447 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers repeatedly praise its performance, beautiful design, and comfortable interior, with especially strong enthusiasm for the M340 variant’s power and driving dynamics. The car also comes through as a premium sedan that feels engaging on the road while still being comfortable enough for broader appeal. On the other hand, the cabin can feel cramped for taller occupants, and some owners mention interior noise and pricing concerns.
That mix fits you best if you want a premium sedan that prioritizes driving enjoyment without giving up everyday comfort. The market also shows 35.5% good or great deals, so there are still attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with, especially when it comes to performance and comfort over time. The expert notes also emphasize that BMW includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership friction. The overall picture is of a premium sedan that can be satisfying to own, but one where you should still expect higher long-term costs than a mainstream car.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that strong satisfaction does not erase the possibility of expensive repairs or option-related ownership costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim and options advertised. Because this model can be expensive to buy and equip, you want to make sure the specific car you choose justifies its price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 330i starts at $40,750 without extra-cost metallic paint, while the M340i rises to $56,000 with xDrive. The M340i adds a more serious performance character and richer equipment, while the base car is the more accessible entry point.
- Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. It is tuned for strong acceleration and enthusiastic driving.
- Safety package: To get the latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The standard feature list is not detailed here, so pay close attention to which assistance features are actually included on the car you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The system uses a touchscreen, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar knob and buttons. The touchscreen is described as easy to use, and the voice system responds to natural commands.
- Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the value-oriented choice if you want the 3 Series experience without stretching to the pricier performance model. It still delivers the core BMW driving feel, and the expert notes suggest many enthusiasts would be happy with it while saving a substantial amount of money.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest performance and the most compelling overall package. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, xDrive availability, and the most enthusiast-focused hardware, making it the clear pick if driving enjoyment matters most.
For safety equipment, note that the latest advanced driver-assistance systems require two Driving Assistance option packages.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,447 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,605, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $23,691 sits slightly below last year's $25,668.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. The model’s premium badge and enthusiast appeal can still support demand, but condition and trim matter a lot.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
To get the latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need to option the car with two Driving Assistance packages. The available systems were described as accurate but sometimes not especially smooth, and the lane-keeping assist is noted as abrupt. That means you should verify exactly which safety features are installed on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 BMW M340i reinforces BMW’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” claim with standout driving enjoyment.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $20,214, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,691 average.
- It keeps the traditional sporty BMW formula while adding a stronger software experience.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $24,901, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,691 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid for more efficiency-focused appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance, comfort, and market availability, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If price is your top priority, the 2019 is the better value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer lineup and can pay more.
