CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Acura MDX

Summary
With 999 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,925, 34.0% of 2020 Acura MDXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Acura MDX 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
64.9% of 2020 MDX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Acura MDX stands out as Acura’s three-row crossover and as the company’s flag carrier with confidence. It has also built a long-running reputation as the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time, which helps explain its loyal repeat audience.
What makes the 2020 MDX appealing is its well-rounded mix of comfort, convenience, and technology. It offers standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, both of which are especially important in a family-focused three-row SUV. At the same time, it is not an industry leader in any single category, and its styling is uninspired while its technology can feel outdated. Even so, the overall package remains attractive for buyers who want a capable luxury crossover that emphasizes practicality and broad appeal.

I really like the Acura MDX. It has MANY extra features on it that make it a safe and comfortable ride, has three rows of seats for major roominess/cargo carrying and I got it at a great price. Its a beautiful SUV. I had a previous MDX for 12 years and literally had 0 major repairs with it. Comparable models are the Lexus RX, which honestly has more responsiveness in handling, but not three row seating unless you pay $10,000 more and also has a rather strange look to it. The closest competition for my money is the BMW X3, which is a smaller 2 row SUV but is very comfortable and has amazing responsiveness in handling. I think visually it is a stunning car. BMWs reliability and cost of repair is concerning to me, but that will probably be my next SUV.

How much does the 2020 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,924 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,924 |
| Year-Round High | $26,460 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,458 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.58% |
Prices have softened 9.58% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,013 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Acura MDX earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its spacious cabin, safety features, comfort, and power, and many also like the stylish design. The trade-offs are familiar: some drivers say the technology feels behind the price, and third-row space can feel tight.
That lines up with the MDX’s role as a family-focused three-row luxury crossover that emphasizes practicality and broad appeal more than standout styling or cutting-edge tech. Even so, the market still shows healthy interest, with 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers describing it as a vehicle they can count on for family use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes solid performance and a well-rounded package, which supports the impression of a mature, long-term product.
The cost-effectiveness notes also help: the MDX starts at $44,500, and the available package structure lets you choose how much equipment you want without overcomplicating the lineup. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that higher-mileage examples may show the usual wear associated with a heavily used three-row luxury SUV, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Acura MDX?
At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping outside the cleanest listings. Focus on bodywork quality, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base MDX is nicely equipped, but it lacks the special tech extras that define the higher packages. The Technology Package adds navigation, parking sensors, and premium audio, while the Advance Package adds a surround-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and Head-Up Warning.
- Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, or the Sport Hybrid with a 3.0-liter V6 and three electric motors making 321 hp and 289 lb-ft. The gasoline model is paired with a nine-speed automatic, while the hybrid uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added with the Technology Package, and Head-Up Warning comes with the Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The base setup includes an 8.0-inch upper screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, five USB ports, SiriusXM, and an eight-speaker audio system. The Technology Package adds a 9.0-inch screen and premium audio, while the Advance Package upgrades to a 16.2-inch ultra-wide screen.
- Fuel efficiency: The gasoline model with front-wheel drive is rated at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined, while SH-AWD returns 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is rated at 26 mpg city/27 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Acura MDX is offered in 4 trim levels: base MDX, Technology Package, Advance Package, and MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.
Here's the short version:
- base MDX: This is the value play if you want the MDX’s core strengths without stretching your budget. You still get standard AcuraWatch safety tech, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a well-equipped cabin, but you give up the extra convenience and premium features in the higher packages.
- Technology Package: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds navigation, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and upgraded audio. If you want a more complete luxury experience without jumping to the top package, this is the one to target.
- Advance Package: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the gasoline lineup. It adds the surround-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, Head-Up Warning, and the larger 16.2-inch screen.
- MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD: Pick this if fuel economy matters more to you and you want the hybrid powertrain’s stronger efficiency. It also brings the hybrid-specific setup and is the right choice if you’re willing to pay more for that efficiency advantage.
The Technology Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Advance Package adds Head-Up Warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,013 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,924, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $23,924 sits slightly below last year's $26,458.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale returns if you buy too high. For a seller, the key is to price competitively and present a clean history, because shoppers are clearly comparing condition and value closely.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX safe?
The 2020 Acura MDX rates good in all IIHS crash-test categories and earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Technology Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Advance Package adds Head-Up Warning.
One caveat is that the IIHS rates the headlights as only acceptable, so lighting performance is not as strong as the rest of the safety package.
Should I buy a 2020 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard AcuraWatch safety tech with a spacious, practical three-row layout.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $21,556, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,924 average.
- It is a mature, well-developed three-row crossover with a smooth ride and reliable performance.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2020 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2019 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the MDX’s core strengths.
