CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Acura MDX
overall

Summary
With 979 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,138, 34.0% of 2020 Acura MDXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Acura MDX 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
65.8% of 2020 MDX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Acura MDX stands out as Acura’s three-row crossover and as the company’s flag carrier with confidence. It has also built a long-running reputation as the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time, which helps explain its loyal repeat audience.
What makes the 2020 MDX appealing is its well-rounded mix of comfort, convenience, and technology. It offers standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, both of which are especially important in a family-focused three-row SUV. At the same time, it is not an industry leader in any single category, and its styling is uninspired while its technology can feel outdated. Even so, the overall package remains attractive for buyers who want a capable luxury crossover that emphasizes practicality and broad appeal.

I really like the Acura MDX. It has MANY extra features on it that make it a safe and comfortable ride, has three rows of seats for major roominess/cargo carrying and I got it at a great price. Its a beautiful SUV. I had a previous MDX for 12 years and literally had 0 major repairs with it. Comparable models are the Lexus RX, which honestly has more responsiveness in handling, but not three row seating unless you pay $10,000 more and also has a rather strange look to it. The closest competition for my money is the BMW X3, which is a smaller 2 row SUV but is very comfortable and has amazing responsiveness in handling. I think visually it is a stunning car. BMWs reliability and cost of repair is concerning to me, but that will probably be my next SUV.

How much does the 2020 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,138 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,138 |
| Year-Round High | $26,619 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,618 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.32% |
Prices have softened 9.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 978 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Acura MDX earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its spacious cabin, safety features, comfort, and power. The MDX also fits well as a family-focused three-row luxury SUV, with broad appeal for buyers who want practicality and a premium feel. On the trade-off side, the technology can feel dated and the styling is more restrained than exciting.
With 33.3% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with repeated praise for comfort, safety, and a solid overall ownership experience. The expert review also emphasizes the MDX’s mature, well-developed character and its ability to deliver a composed, confidence-inspiring drive. Acura’s standard maintenance coverage can also help reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its premium features and overall condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Acura MDX?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with prior bodywork. Focus on signs of uneven wear, interior condition, and whether the technology and safety systems operate as intended. Because this is a three-row luxury SUV, it’s worth checking that the cabin, seats, and electronics still feel consistent with the vehicle’s premium positioning.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base MDX is nicely equipped, but it lacks the extra tech features that define the higher packages. The Technology Package adds navigation, parking sensors, and premium audio, while the Advance Package adds a surround-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and Head-Up Warning.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, or the Sport Hybrid with a 3.0-liter V6 and three electric motors making 321 hp and 289 lb-ft. The gasoline model is paired with a nine-speed automatic, while the hybrid uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
- Safety package: Standard AcuraWatch includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added with the Technology Package, and Head-Up Warning comes with the Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The base setup includes an 8.0-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, five USB ports, and an eight-speaker audio system. The Technology Package adds a 9.0-inch screen and navigation, while the Advance Package uses a 16.2-inch Ultra-Wide Full VGA screen.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined, while SH-AWD returns 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is rated at 26 mpg city/27 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Acura MDX is offered in 3 trim levels: MDX, Technology Package, and Advance Package.
Here's the short version:
- MDX: This is the best-value starting point if you want the core MDX experience without paying for extra luxury-tech content. You still get standard AcuraWatch, a spacious cabin, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the MDX’s well-rounded comfort and practicality.
- Technology Package: This is the trim to target if you want the strongest balance of value and equipment. It adds navigation, parking sensors, premium audio, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, making it the most compelling step up for many shoppers.
- Advance Package: Choose this if you want the most upscale MDX experience, with the surround-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, Head-Up Warning, and the larger 16.2-inch screen.
The safety package is strongest once you move beyond the base trim, since blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are added with the Technology Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 978 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,138, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $24,138 sits slightly below last year's $26,618.
That decline suggests the MDX has softened in the near term, which can be a concern if you’re planning to sell soon. For a future seller, the key question is whether the vehicle’s condition and equipment help it stand out from similar listings. Well-kept examples with desirable features should be easier to position than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX safe?
The 2020 Acura MDX earns Good ratings from IIHS across all crash-test categories and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard AcuraWatch includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Technology Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Advance Package adds Head-Up Warning. You also get a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, plus a broad set of passive safety hardware including multiple airbags, stability control, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
One caveat is that the base trim does not include blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, so shoppers who want a fuller safety suite should look higher in the lineup.
Should I buy a 2020 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 MDX combines standard advanced safety features with a spacious, family-friendly cabin.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $21,719, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,138 average.
- It reflects a mature, well-developed product with a smooth ride and a spacious interior.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2020 is the better primary target. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2019 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers many of the MDX strengths that matter most to used buyers.
