CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Acura MDX
overall

Summary
With 958 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,183, 32.7% of 2020 Acura MDXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Acura MDX 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
64.6% of 2020 MDX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Acura MDX stands out as Acura’s three-row crossover and as the company’s flag carrier with confidence. It has also built a long-running reputation as the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time, which helps explain its loyal repeat audience.
What makes the 2020 MDX appealing is its well-rounded mix of comfort, convenience, and technology. It offers standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, both of which are especially important in a family-focused three-row SUV. At the same time, it is not an industry leader in any single category, and its styling is uninspired while its technology can feel outdated. Even so, the overall package remains attractive for buyers who want a capable luxury crossover that emphasizes practicality and broad appeal.

I really like the Acura MDX. It has MANY extra features on it that make it a safe and comfortable ride, has three rows of seats for major roominess/cargo carrying and I got it at a great price. Its a beautiful SUV. I had a previous MDX for 12 years and literally had 0 major repairs with it. Comparable models are the Lexus RX, which honestly has more responsiveness in handling, but not three row seating unless you pay $10,000 more and also has a rather strange look to it. The closest competition for my money is the BMW X3, which is a smaller 2 row SUV but is very comfortable and has amazing responsiveness in handling. I think visually it is a stunning car. BMWs reliability and cost of repair is concerning to me, but that will probably be my next SUV.

How much does the 2020 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,150 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,150 |
| Year-Round High | $26,678 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,676 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.47% |
Prices have softened 9.47% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 974 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Acura MDX earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its spacious cabin, safety features, comfort, and strong power delivery. The review summary also points to a family-friendly feel and a design that many shoppers find appealing.
The trade-offs are familiar: the technology can feel behind the times for the price, and third-row space may feel tight for some buyers. That lines up with the overview, which frames the MDX as a practical three-row luxury crossover that emphasizes comfort, convenience, and broad appeal more than class-leading flash.
Good and great deals account for 33.8% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers describing it as a vehicle they can count on for family use and everyday comfort. The expert evaluation also emphasizes solid performance and a well-rounded package, which supports the sense that it is built to handle long-term use without drama.
The cost-effectiveness notes also show that Acura keeps the MDX’s ownership proposition straightforward, with clearly packaged equipment and no complicated trim maze. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and equipped with the features you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Acura MDX?
At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with a prior claim. Focus on overall condition, signs of repair quality, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect from the trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base MDX is nicely equipped, but it lacks the extra tech features that define the higher packages. The Technology Package adds navigation, parking sensors, remote start, and premium audio, while the Advance Package adds a surround-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and Head-Up Warning.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 with a nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, or the MDX Sport Hybrid with a 3.0-liter V6 and three electric motors for 321 hp and all-wheel drive. The gasoline model is described as smooth and surprisingly nimble, especially with SH-AWD.
- Safety package: Standard AcuraWatch includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are added with the Technology Package, while Head-Up Warning comes with the Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The base setup includes an 8.0-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, text and email capability, five USB ports, SiriusXM, and an eight-speaker audio system. The Technology Package upgrades to a 9.0-inch screen and premium audio, while the Advance Package uses a 16.2-inch ultra-wide screen.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined, while SH-AWD returns 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is rated at 26 mpg city/27 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Acura MDX is offered in 3 trim levels: MDX, MDX with Technology Package, MDX with Advance Package.
Here's the short version:
- MDX: This is the value play if you want the core MDX experience with standard AcuraWatch, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a strong list of everyday tech. It suits you best if you care more about the fundamentals than the extra luxury and convenience features.
- MDX with Technology Package: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds navigation, parking sensors, remote start, premium audio, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want a more complete luxury-SUV experience without jumping too far in price, this is the one to target.
- MDX with Advance Package: This is the right pick if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a surround-view camera, and Head-Up Warning. It makes the most sense if you plan to keep the vehicle a long time and want the most upscale setup.
The Technology Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Advance Package adds Head-Up Warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 974 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,150, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $24,150 sits slightly below last year's $26,676.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level rather than broad market momentum alone.
Because the MDX has a strong reputation with owners and a loyal audience, well-kept examples should still attract steady interest. Higher trims with desirable safety and convenience features may hold appeal better than stripped-down versions.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Acura MDX safe?
The Acura MDX earns good ratings from IIHS across all crash-test categories and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard AcuraWatch includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Technology Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Advance Package adds Head-Up Warning.
That makes the MDX especially appealing if safety is a top priority for your family. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety and visibility features are reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2020 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its standard advanced safety features and broad family-friendly appeal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $21,851, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,150 average.
- It feels like a mature, well-developed product with a smooth ride and a spacious interior.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market value story and a broad mix of safety, comfort, and technology, the 2020 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2019 is the sensible alternative, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
