What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on signs of uneven wear, repair quality, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim level you expect. If you’re comparing listings, pay close attention to how much safety and convenience equipment is included, since the lower trims leave some desirable features out.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S comes well equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED head- and taillights, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Car-Net App-Connect, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The SE adds V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start. The R-Line adds unique exterior styling, fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, and Volkswagen’s XDS differential for a more sporting drive. The SEL adds an upgraded 8-inch infotainment screen, satellite radio, and Digital Cockpit. The SEL Premium adds leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a navigation system, and a 400-watt BeatsAudio system.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The 8-speed automatic helps the car feel responsive and efficient, while the 6-speed manual is also available.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a full array of front and side airbags, a reversing camera, tire pressure monitoring, and automatic post-collision braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision avoidance are standard on the SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium, but optional on the base S. The SEL and SEL Premium also add adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams.
• Infotainment: The base car gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Car-Net App-Connect, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The SEL and SEL Premium upgrade to an 8-inch screen and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, which can project navigation directly onto a 10.25-inch display.
• Fuel efficiency: The Jetta returns 30 mpg city, 40 highway, and 34 combined.

Which 2019 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped car with LED lighting, a touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a strong standard feature set. It’s the trim to target if you care most about affordability and don’t need the extra comfort and driver-assistance features.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds heated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision avoidance.
• R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance and the XDS differential, but keep in mind that it doesn’t add more horsepower. It’s more about style and a slightly more engaging feel than outright performance.
• SEL: This is the tech-forward upgrade, thanks to the 8-inch infotainment screen, satellite radio, and Digital Cockpit. It makes sense if you want a more premium cabin experience and more advanced convenience features.
• SEL Premium: This is the most luxurious choice, with leather upholstery, heated rear seats, navigation, a power driver’s seat with memory, and the upgraded BeatsAudio system. It’s the right pick if you want the most comfort and equipment.

The SEL and SEL Premium also add adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams.

• Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,468 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.83% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 64.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,927, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $12,934 sits slightly below last year's $13,735.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you’re thinking about future resale. If you buy at a strong price and keep the car in good condition, you’ll be better positioned when it’s time to sell. The Jetta’s combination of value, efficiency, and owner satisfaction should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
