The new turbocharged engine adds punch and efficiency, but the expert notes do raise a longevity question around the motor design, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and how the car has been driven.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the turbocharged powertrain feels smooth and responsive on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 1.4T S starts with 15-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, full power, air conditioning, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The S Tech Package adds a 6.3-inch touchscreen, USB port, satellite radio, rear-view camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 1.4T SE adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats. The 1.4T SE is the best-value trim if you want a stronger everyday feature set without moving too far upmarket.
• Powertrain: The new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from low rpm, with 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined using the automatic and 33 combined with the manual. The 1.8-liter turbo adds more power up high, and the 2.0-liter turbo is the quickest option with 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Those features are especially important on 1.8T trims.
• Infotainment: The upgraded setup centers on a 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an actual USB port. That combination is a major usability upgrade over the older setup.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined with the automatic and 33 combined with the manual. The 1.8-liter turbo is rated at 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined, while the 2.0-liter turbo returns 24 mpg city/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: 1.4T S, 1.4T SE, 1.8T Sport, 1.8T SEL.

Here's the short version:

• 1.4T S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics plus the Jetta’s new turbocharged engine. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but the feature set is sparse unless you add the S Tech Package.
• 1.4T SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats without pushing you into the pricier upper trims. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort and value, this is the one to target.
• 1.8T Sport: This trim is for you if you want the larger engine and a sport suspension. It also gets 17-inch alloys and drops the sunroof, so it leans more toward driving feel than luxury.
• 1.8T SEL: This is the more upscale choice, with a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than price.

The Driver Assistance package on 1.8T trims adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent opportunities.

• Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 989 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,819, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $8,963 sits slightly below last year's $9,172.

That kind of softening suggests the market has become a little more buyer-friendly, which can work against you if you plan to sell soon. If you own one now, pricing pressure may continue unless your car stands out with strong condition, good maintenance records, and desirable equipment.

The Jetta’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with the right trim and safety features.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The Volkswagen Jetta earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal impact tests and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The new turbo engine and added safety tech make this year feel more modern and more competitive.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,903, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,963 average.
• It feels more engaging and practical for everyday driving.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,291, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,963 average.
• It adds a standard reversing camera and a few useful safety updates.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, updated powertrain, and available safety tech, the 2016 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 is worth a look if you want the added convenience of its standard camera.

How does the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta compare to the 2016 Honda Civic?
