How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI cost?

There are 248 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated car with an expert score of 8.2/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the GTI for being fun to drive, with sporty performance and great handling coming up again and again. They also highlight the comfortable interior and spacious trunk, which helps the car work as both a daily driver and a weekend toy.

The trade-offs are familiar for this kind of hatchback: the back seat can feel cramped, and the stereo is a weak point. That makes the GTI especially appealing if you care more about driving enjoyment and everyday usefulness than rear-seat comfort or audio quality.

The GTI’s practical hatchback layout and lively character make it a strong fit if you want a compact car that feels engaging without giving up utility. With 35.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also a decent amount of market value to be found.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe the GTI as fun, practical, and comfortable, and that combination often goes hand in hand with a car people feel good about keeping. The expert notes also point to a solid ownership proposition, with a transferable 6-year/72,000-mile warranty plan adding extra peace of mind.

The performance write-up emphasizes that the GTI is built to deliver years of satisfaction, and the cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that it’s meant to be a car you can live with over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about finding one that hasn’t been driven hard or neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the car has been modified or driven aggressively.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim is the most basic version, and it lacks the standard adaptive LED front lighting found on the other trims. The Rabbit Edition adds unique appearance touches, while SE and Autobahn bring more upscale equipment and features.
• Powertrain: The GTI uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The standard manual is part of the appeal, while the available DSG adds automatic convenience and extra performance-oriented features.
• Safety package: The S trim can get forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert as a $450 option package. Those features are standard on the Rabbit Edition, while Autobahn adds adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: S and Rabbit Edition models get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link support. SE upgrades to an 8-inch display with HD Radio and satellite radio, and Autobahn adds navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test car returned 27 mpg in combined driving, and the write-up notes 25.1 mpg in mixed real-world use.

Which 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI is offered in 4 trim levels: S, Rabbit Edition, SE, and Autobahn.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GTI’s core appeal: the turbocharged engine, sharp handling, and the basic infotainment setup with smartphone integration. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest-cost way into the GTI formula.
• Rabbit Edition: This trim sits between S and SE and adds distinctive styling touches plus standard driver-assistance features that are optional on S. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more complete package without jumping to the pricier trims.
• SE: This trim brings the larger 8-inch infotainment screen, HD Radio, satellite radio, and an available Fender premium audio system. It’s a smart middle ground if you want more comfort and tech without going all the way to Autobahn.
• Autobahn: This is the most fully equipped GTI, with standard adaptive damping suspension, navigation, premium audio, and the most advanced safety and convenience features. It suits you best if you want the most refined and feature-rich version.

Safety-package note: the S trim’s driver-assistance features are optional, while Rabbit Edition includes them as standard equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some patience and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 248 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,993, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI's resale value?

The current average of $19,595 sits slightly below last year's $19,609.

That small decline suggests the GTI has been holding value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply up or down. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually points to a market that remains familiar with the car’s appeal and willing to pay for the right example.

Because the GTI has a strong enthusiast following and a reputation for blending fun with practicality, well-kept examples should continue to attract interest. Condition, mileage, and maintenance history will matter a lot if you want to maximize resale later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI safe?

The 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with a four-star rating for the front passenger in the frontal impact test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it high marks, though front passenger protection receives an Acceptable rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen includes automatic post-collision braking on every GTI, and the car also offers forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on the S trim as an option package. Those features are standard on the Rabbit Edition, while Autobahn adds adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.

The main caveat is that the IIHS small-overlap result is not as strong as the rest of the safety picture, so you should pay close attention to trim and equipment when shopping.

Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 adds more power and standard torque-vectoring hardware, making it especially rewarding to drive.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $17,748, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $19,595 average.
• It emphasizes everyday usability and practical hot-hatch balance.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around GTI with the latest performance and safety improvements, the 2019 is the better pick. If your priority is saving money and you still want the core hot-hatch formula, the 2018 is the more budget-friendly path.

How does the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI compare to the 2019 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI 8.2/10 and the 2019 Honda Civic 7.8/10.

The GTI is the more expensive and more performance-focused choice, with stronger horsepower and a more enthusiast-oriented driving character. The Civic is cheaper to buy and returns better highway fuel economy, so it makes more sense if your priorities lean toward value and efficiency.
