CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 3,442 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,647.00, 30.4% of 2019 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4.22 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
64.9% of 2019 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma stands out by leaning fully into what a pickup is supposed to be. It is described as unapologetically unrefined, a truck “pure and simple” that does not try to be anything else, and that raw honesty is presented as part of its appeal rather than a flaw. The truck also has a reputation for being a faithful companion and a trusted partner that is ready for just about anything, which helps explain why it has such a loyal following.
Its strengths are straightforward: stylish design and excellent value for money. The evaluation also notes that, over the course of a week of testing, the truck became more endearing with time, and that there is a good reason it is the best-selling midsize pickup in America. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its compromises. Outdated technology and poor ride quality are clear drawbacks, so the 2019 Toyota Tacoma is best suited to buyers who value character, utility, and a no-nonsense approach more than polish.

This vehicle had a terrible engine vibration under load, it was dirty, and dirt everywhere , the tow hitch showed signs of heavy work, and when trying to explain it to the dealer , they more or less couldn’t wait for me to get off there lot.

Love this model, but not this particular unit. It has been hit three times, the back bumper was smashed. I was told it was going to be replaced. The truck was filthy, and the salesman was not honest about the Carfax or the advertised price.

Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.22/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers commonly praise its reliability, solid performance, and longevity, and many also value its resale strength. The truck’s loyal following is reinforced by its reputation as a trusted partner that can handle a lot of different jobs.
The trade-offs are clear: outdated technology and poor ride quality. That makes it a better fit if you want character, utility, and value rather than a polished daily-driver experience.
With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.22/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers frequently describe it as reliable, with strong longevity and a reputation for being a truck you can count on. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its legendary indestructibility and notes that it is known to hold its value over time.
Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. Even so, used buyers should still watch for signs of hard use, since trucks like this can accumulate wear in ways that aren’t obvious at first glance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of bodywork, suspension, brakes, and interior wear. Because this truck is often bought for work and recreation, condition can vary a lot from one listing to the next.
Pay extra attention to how the truck drives on rough pavement and whether the cabin and controls show signs of heavy use. A careful test drive matters here because the Tacoma’s rugged reputation does not guarantee every example has been treated gently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The trims differ through grilles, wheels, hoods, and finishes, and the cabin stays simple with hard plastics, analog gauges, and glove-friendly knobs and buttons. Base versions also miss the more upscale touches found higher up the range.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a direct-injected, Atkinson-cycle, 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. V6 models include towing hardware, and the maximum tow rating reaches 6,800 pounds, depending on version.
- Safety package: Every 2019 Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
- Infotainment: The truck uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air capability. The interface is dated, and the controls are not especially friendly.
- Fuel efficiency: The test truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA, logged 18.9 mpg on the test loop, and averaged 20.1 mpg over the week.
Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR is the most affordable choice, but it gives up the more upscale appearance and equipment found higher in the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 is the best value if you want a step up without chasing the pricier specialty trims.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most polished everyday choice, with the test truck’s Double Cab, short bed, V6, 4WD setup showing how far the Tacoma can be equipped.
- Off-road trim: TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro are the right picks if you want the truck’s most serious trail hardware, including Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,499 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,470.10, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $29,651 sits slightly below last year's $30,452.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted somewhat. For a future seller, that means your upside will depend more on condition, mileage, and trim than on broad market momentum alone.
The Tacoma’s reputation for holding value remains a major advantage if you plan to own it for a while. Strong demand for well-kept examples should continue to support resale strength, especially for trucks with desirable equipment and clean history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.22/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Tacoma fares well in crash testing, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the Tacoma Double Cab a four-star overall rating for crash protection.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind: headlight performance and LATCH anchor access rate as Marginal, and the Double Cab gets an Acceptable rather than Good rating for small overlap, frontal-impact, front passenger protection. The Access Cab was not assessed in that latter test.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.22/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It delivers strong value, a rugged personality, and standard Toyota Safety Sense.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,247, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,651 average.
- It adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and an 8-inch screen.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2019 if you want the better price and can live with its older tech. If smartphone integration matters more than saving money, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade path for a little extra cash.
