CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 3,494 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,679.00, 31.5% of 2019 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4.22 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
66.0% of 2019 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma stands out by leaning fully into what a pickup is supposed to be. It is described as unapologetically unrefined, a truck “pure and simple” that does not try to be anything else, and that raw honesty is presented as part of its appeal rather than a flaw. The truck also has a reputation for being a faithful companion and a trusted partner that is ready for just about anything, which helps explain why it has such a loyal following.
Its strengths are straightforward: stylish design and excellent value for money. The evaluation also notes that, over the course of a week of testing, the truck became more endearing with time, and that there is a good reason it is the best-selling midsize pickup in America. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its compromises. Outdated technology and poor ride quality are clear drawbacks, so the 2019 Toyota Tacoma is best suited to buyers who value character, utility, and a no-nonsense approach more than polish.

This vehicle had a terrible engine vibration under load, it was dirty, and dirt everywhere , the tow hitch showed signs of heavy work, and when trying to explain it to the dealer , they more or less couldn’t wait for me to get off there lot.

Love this model, but not this particular unit. It has been hit three times, the back bumper was smashed. I was told it was going to be replaced. The truck was filthy, and the salesman was not honest about the Carfax or the advertised price.

Owners rate it 4.22/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, longevity, and resale value, with many drivers describing it as a truck they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its dependable, long-haul character and notes that its quality and durability make it easy to live with over the long haul. Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a truck with this kind of reputation can still hide wear if it has been worked hard or poorly maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from trucks with collision or title issues. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on suspension, brakes, and any signs of hard use. You should also focus on cabin condition and tech operation, since some owners note limited space and feature frustrations.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The trims differ in grilles, wheels, hoods, and finishes, and the cabin is built around hard, durable plastics with simple analog gauges and large knobs and buttons. Base versions lean especially functional rather than upscale.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a direct-injected, Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. V6 models include towing hardware, and the maximum tow rating reaches 6,800 pounds, depending on configuration.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
- Infotainment: The truck uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, and OTA capability for this model year.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA, 18.9 mpg on the test loop, and 20.1 mpg over the full week.
Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR is the most stripped-down choice, and it leans hardest into the Tacoma’s functional cabin and feature set rather than comfort or polish.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 is the best value pick if you want a more balanced everyday truck without jumping into the pricier specialty trims.
- Premium/top trim: Limited adds the most upscale feel in this lineup, but it still keeps the Tacoma’s rugged, old-school character.
- Off-road trim: TRD Off-Road is the one to choose if you want the Tacoma’s trail hardware, but it is more truck than most daily drivers need.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,515 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.93% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,450.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $29,679 sits slightly below last year's $30,574.
That kind of softening can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests future sellers may not see rapid appreciation from today’s price point. Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for durability and value retention should help it remain attractive to used buyers. If you keep mileage, condition, and maintenance records in good shape, you should be in a stronger position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.22/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Tacoma Double Cab earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and the IIHS says it fares well overall. It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions. The main caveats are that headlight performance and LATCH anchor access rate as Marginal, and Double Cab versions get an Acceptable rather than Good rating for small overlap, frontal-impact, front passenger protection.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.22/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out for strong value, standard safety tech, and a rugged, dependable character.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,240, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,679 average.
- It adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and an 8-inch screen.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you are willing to pay more for updated tech, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade path, especially if infotainment matters to you.
