CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Avalon
overall

Summary
With 281 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,861.00, 29.2% of 2019 Toyota Avalons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Avalon 4.93 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
62.6% of 2019 Avalon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Toyota redesigned the 2019 Toyota Avalon to appeal to a younger audience, and the result is a sedan that feels more modern and more engaging than its reputation might suggest. New tech, new looks, and more power help it stand out, while a longer wheelbase and a big power bump add to the sense that this generation was meant to be a fresh start. It also brings some new standard safety equipment, which strengthens its appeal for buyers looking for a well-rounded full-size sedan.
What makes the 2019 Toyota Avalon especially distinctive is the way it blends value and driving enjoyment. It is described as excellent value for money and fun to drive, which is not always the combination shoppers expect from a car in this class. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: outdated technology remains a weakness, and all-wheel drive is not available. Some drivers also noted missing features such as auto wipers and cooled seats, which can make the car feel less complete than its strengths would otherwise suggest.

This is our second Toyota Avalon. We love the performance, comfort, gas mileage, technology, dependability. The car was a good value and after shopping for several months, felt like this one was right for us. It was in perfect shape. On the 400 mile trip home from the dealer, someone passing me gave me a thumbs up. It is a beautiful car.

Toyota also highlights a standard safety suite and strong value, both of which can help ownership feel reassuring over the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific car has been maintained well and equipped the way you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Avalon?
At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model year is praised for comfort, performance, and safety, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is more likely to deliver the ownership experience you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XLE starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, auto LEDs, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and ignition, heated power seats, heated mirrors, and a long list of tech and safety features. The XSE adds 19-inch wheels, gloss black exterior trim, a sunroof, a rear spoiler, paddle shifters, aluminum trim, microsuede seat panels, and extra engine noise through the stereo, while the Limited shifts toward luxury with 18-inch wheels, a head-up display, leather and wood trim, heated rear seats and steering wheel, lighting upgrades, wireless phone charging, embedded navigation, and an upgraded JBL stereo. The Touring combines the XSE and Limited equipment and adds adaptive suspension, sport exhaust, active noise cancellation, and a Sport+ driving mode.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed transmission and front-wheel drive. The base XLE is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the rest of the lineup gives up 1 mpg on the highway and combined cycle.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Advanced Safety package adds front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and auto-braking for rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The system centers on a 9-inch touchscreen with pinch-and-zoom navigation, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 5 devices, Toyota Remote Connect, and Alexa support. Android Auto is not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The base XLE is rated at 26 mpg combined, with 22 city and 32 highway. The rest of the lineup is rated 1 mpg lower on the highway and combined cycle.
Which 2019 Toyota Avalon trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Avalon is offered in 4 trim levels: XLE, XSE, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Avalon’s core strengths without paying for extras you may not need. You still get the full-size-sedan comfort, the V6 power, and the standard safety and tech equipment that make this model stand out.
- XSE: Choose this if you want a more expressive look and a sportier feel, thanks to the 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, sunroof, rear spoiler, paddle shifters, and interior upgrades. It’s the trim that most clearly leans into the Avalon’s more youthful personality.
- Limited: This is the trim to target if you want the most luxury-oriented setup, with leather and wood trim, a head-up display, heated rear seats and steering wheel, wireless charging, embedded navigation, and the upgraded JBL audio system.
- Touring: Pick this if you want the most complete and most driver-focused version, since it combines XSE and Limited equipment and adds adaptive suspension, sport exhaust, active noise cancellation, and Sport+ mode.
The standard safety package is already strong, and the available Advanced Safety package adds even more protection.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Avalon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 299 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.33% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,861.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Avalon’s resale value?
The current average of $23,864 sits slightly below last year's $25,476.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means your upside may depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market appreciation.
Well-kept examples with desirable trims and strong documentation should hold up better than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Avalon safe?
The 2019 Toyota Avalon earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The available Advanced Safety package adds front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and auto-braking for rear cross-traffic alert.
That strong standard suite is a major reason this model year stands out for safety, and it gives you a lot of protection even before you add options.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Avalon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 brings a redesigned look, more power, and new standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,889, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $23,864 average.
- It rides on the TNGA platform and is framed as a revitalized flagship sedan.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong satisfaction and safety. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s platform story and can justify the premium, the 2020 is the secondary path.
