Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by making a compact car feel upscale, refined, and genuinely athletic. Mazda’s driving focus has long been part of the model’s identity, and this version is presented as the brand’s masterstroke in that direction. It also brings standard advanced safety features, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a small car that feels more polished than basic.
That polish comes with a few tradeoffs. The car is described as not always being the segment’s most functional, and its technology is called unintuitive. Space is another limitation, with a cramped back seat. Even so, the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 is appealing because it combines fun-to-drive character with a more premium feel than many compact cars in its class.

I own the base model with 2.5 motor and its an amazing car all around!! Even at base trim level it is very well equipped and its performance speaks for itself. Wish I bought the manual transmission because these things love to be at high revs.

There are 557 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $15,919.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.00/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable driving experience, smooth ride, upscale interior features, performance, and handling. That lines up well with the car’s upscale, refined, and athletic positioning, especially if you want a compact car that feels more premium than basic.
The main trade-offs are the unintuitive technology and the cramped back seat. In practical terms, this is a better fit if you value style, driving enjoyment, and cabin polish more than maximum rear-seat space or the most intuitive interface.
There are 24.2% good or great deals in the market, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a comfortable, smooth, and trouble-free-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the car’s upscale interior and driving manners. That kind of feedback matters when you’re trying to judge whether a used car will feel dependable over time.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the car as a solid commuter with composed ride quality, responsive acceleration, and athletic handling. It also notes that the model’s efficiency and everyday usability make it easy to live with.
If you’re buying used, the biggest long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and interior wear. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on its premium feel, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.
Pay extra attention to the rear seat and the infotainment system during your test drive, since those are the areas most likely to affect day-to-day satisfaction. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on how complete the equipment is and whether the car feels as polished as it should for the price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base sedan is lighter on content than the base hatchback, while the hatchback adds 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, dual-zone automatic climate control, a drowsiness alert, synthetic leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The base hatchback is the better-equipped starting point.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 186 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. AWD is only available with the automatic.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-Activsense suite includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. It is standard on the base hatchback, but not on the base sedan, where you need to move up to the Select Sedan trim for many of those features.
- Infotainment: The car uses an 8.8-inch MazdaConnect screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is remote-controlled rather than a conventional touchscreen, so you should test it yourself before buying.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version returns 27 mpg city, 36 highway, 30 combined. The least efficient version returns 24/32/27. Other versions return 25/33/28, 25/35/29, or 26/35/30 depending on body style, drivetrain, and transmission.
Which 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 5 trim levels: base Sedan, Select Sedan, Preferred Sedan, Premium Sedan, and base Hatchback.
Here's the short version:
- base Sedan: This is the least expensive entry point, but it gives up some of the content that makes the hatchback feel more complete. It makes sense if your priority is the lowest starting price and you do not need the extra standard equipment found on the hatchback.
- Select Sedan: This is the step-up sedan trim and the better value if you want more of the Mazda3’s upscale feel without jumping too far in price. It picks up much of the equipment that helps the car feel more premium and is the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of price and features.
- Preferred Sedan: This trim adds an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, power-adjustable side mirrors, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. It suits you if comfort and audio quality matter more than keeping the budget tight.
- Premium Sedan: This is the most upscale sedan trim, with leather seats, a power moonroof, a head-up display, adaptive headlights, and the manual transmission availability. Choose it if you want the richest feature set and the most premium experience.
- base Hatchback: This is the CarGurus Recommended Trim and the best-value choice. It combines strong styling with 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, dual-zone automatic climate control, a drowsiness alert, synthetic leather upholstery, and the standard safety suite, making it the smartest all-around pick.
The safety package is standard on the base hatchback, while the base sedan needs a trim upgrade for many of those driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 557 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.79% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,919.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $16,920 sits slightly below last year's $17,771.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become more approachable for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady if you decide to sell later. A lower entry price can also make it easier for your listing to stand out if your car is clean, well maintained, and properly equipped.
Because the market has already adjusted downward, future resale gains may depend more on condition, trim, and mileage than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples should still attract attention, especially if they preserve the car’s upscale look and strong feature content.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The base hatchback comes standard with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. Those features are not standard on the base sedan, so you need to move up to the Select Sedan trim for many of them.
The hatchback’s large C-pillars create big blind spots, and the electronic parking brake behavior is also a little awkward in daily use. Those are the kinds of details you should notice during a test drive, especially if you plan to use the car in tight urban driving or frequent stop-and-go traffic.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.79% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 redesign pushes the Mazda3 closer to near-luxury territory while adding standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,993, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,920 average.
- It further emphasizes a premium feel against mass-market rivals.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, owner satisfaction, and upscale character, the 2019 is the stronger buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year and a slightly more premium impression, the 2020 is the cleaner alternative. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2019’s softer pricing and decent deal availability make it the more compelling path.
