CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 571 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,720, 29.4% of 2019 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
63.6% of 2019 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by making a small car feel upscale, refined, and genuinely athletic. Mazda’s driving dynamics have long been part of the model’s identity, and this fourth-generation version is presented as the brand’s masterstroke in that direction. It also brings standard advanced safety features, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a compact car that feels more polished than basic.
At the same time, the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 is not the most practical choice in its class. Its technology is described as unintuitive, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the car’s fun-to-drive character and upscale feel make it distinctive for shoppers who value driving enjoyment and a more premium atmosphere in a compact package.

I own the base model with 2.5 motor and its an amazing car all around!! Even at base trim level it is very well equipped and its performance speaks for itself. Wish I bought the manual transmission because these things love to be at high revs.

Yes — with a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, this model lands strongly with both owners and reviewers. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable driving experience, smooth ride, upscale interior features, performance, and handling. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a compact car that feels refined, athletic, and more premium than basic.
The main trade-offs are the unintuitive technology and cramped back seat, so you should expect the strongest fit if you value driving enjoyment and a polished cabin more than maximum practicality. Even so, the market still shows 29.6% good or great deals, which points to solid shopping opportunities.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise centered on comfort, smoothness, and the kind of upscale execution that tends to inspire confidence over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the car as composed, responsive, and well sorted in everyday driving.
The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that Mazda3 ownership delivers a lot of content for the money, which can help make long-term use feel worthwhile. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability than about making sure the specific car you choose has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with a lower price or a higher trim level. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim you think you’re buying.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base sedan is lighter on content than the base hatchback, while the hatchback adds 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, dual-zone automatic climate control, a drowsiness alert, synthetic leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The base sedan includes 16-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, LED head- and taillights, an 8-speaker sound system, the infotainment system, and one-touch up and down power windows for all four windows.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 186 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. AWD is only available with the automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-Activsense suite includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. It comes standard on the base hatchback, but not on the base sedan, where you need to move up to the Select Sedan trim for many of those features.
- Infotainment: The car uses an 8.8-inch MazdaConnect screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is remote-controlled rather than touch-operated, so you should test it yourself before buying.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version returns 27 mpg city, 36 highway, 30 combined. The least efficient version returns 24/32/27. Other versions include 25/33/28, 25/35/29, 26/35/30, and a test result of 28.2 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 6 trim levels: Sedan, Select Sedan, Preferred Sedan, Premium Sedan, Hatchback, Preferred Hatchback.
Here's the short version:
- Sedan: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Mazda3 experience with the 16-inch wheels, push-button start, LED lighting, 8-speaker audio, and the 8.8-inch infotainment screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the extra equipment that comes standard on the hatchback.
- Select Sedan: This is the trim that closes much of the gap between the base sedan and the better-equipped hatchback, so it is the most sensible value step if you want more comfort and convenience without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Preferred Sedan: This trim adds the 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, power-adjustable side mirrors, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver and care about comfort upgrades.
- Premium Sedan: This is the most fully featured sedan, with leather seats, a power moonroof, a head-up display, adaptive headlights, and the manual transmission option. It is the right pick if you want the richest equipment mix and the most premium feel.
- Hatchback: This is the CarGurus Recommended Trim, and it stands out for giving you a lot of content for the money. It also includes the standard i-Activsense safety suite, which is a major advantage over the base sedan.
- Preferred Hatchback: This trim builds on the hatchback’s strong value with the same upscale comfort and audio upgrades found in the Preferred Sedan, making it a strong choice if you want the hatchback body style with more luxury touches.
The hatchback’s standard i-Activsense suite is the key safety-package advantage, while the base sedan requires a trim upgrade for many of those features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting forever.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 561 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,927, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $16,801 sits slightly below last year's $17,684.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment.
Because the model still has strong owner satisfaction and a premium reputation, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes standard with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. The base hatchback gets this standard, while the base sedan does not, so trim choice matters if safety equipment is a priority.
The safety write-up also flags a few usability quirks, including big blind spots from the hatchback’s C-pillars and a parking-brake system that can feel unintuitive. That means you should pay attention not just to the safety tech list, but also to how the car feels in everyday use.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 redesign gives you the model’s upscale, athletic fourth-generation character.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $18,228, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,801 average.
- It leans even further into a premium feel while keeping the same upscale compact-car mission.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2019 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and owner satisfaction is excellent. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2020 is the secondary path to consider.
