Is the 2019 Ford Ranger a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Ford Ranger earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its robust performance, advanced technology, and good fuel economy. They also call out the responsive engine and towing capacity as standout strengths. In use-case terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a midsize pickup that leans into capability, value, and everyday utility rather than a long list of powertrain choices.

Is the 2019 Ford Ranger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with strong praise for the truck’s robust performance and good fuel economy. The engine is described as a responsive, stout unit, and the transmission is presented as a proven design shared across multiple applications. Ford also notes that early head-gasket concerns tied to a different application were long resolved.

The ownership risk for used buyers is less about the core powertrain and more about finding a well-kept truck with no unresolved recall or prior-use issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Ford Ranger?

At 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing or fleet use in its past. Pay close attention to signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence of prior body or electrical repairs. Condition matters a lot here because the Ranger’s value proposition depends on getting the capability without inheriting avoidable problems.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-down version, with steel 16-inch wheels, a manual-locking tailgate, cloth upholstery, and a spartan 4-speaker stereo. It does still include a rear-view camera, USB port, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while higher trims add more comfort, tech, and appearance upgrades.
• Powertrain: The Ranger uses a single 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine paired with a 10-speed transmission. It delivers 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 city and 26 highway.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 adds auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer tow monitoring, lane-keep warning and assist, forward and reverse parking sensors, and a 110-volt power outlet. Some of these features are optional rather than standard on lower trims.
• Infotainment: The XL includes a rear-view camera, USB port, and Aux jack. Higher trims can add Ford Sync3, which unlocks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus SiriusXM, and the available 8-inch touchscreen appears on the Lariat.
• Fuel efficiency: The Ranger is rated at 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, with 23 mpg combined.

Which 2019 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?

The 2019 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with a basic cabin. It gives you the core Ranger capability, plus useful standard items like a rear-view camera and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. If you want a work-focused truck and plan to add only a few options, this is the trim to start with.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more complete everyday setup without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. You get 17-inch alloys, a 4.2-inch center screen with Ford Sync, an extra USB port, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and an upgraded 6-speaker stereo, with available Sync3 for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
• Lariat: This is the trim to choose if you want the most comfort and convenience features. It adds LEDs front and back, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen, and 18-inch alloys.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is available on lower trims and adds a meaningful safety upgrade if you want more driver assistance.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Ford Ranger?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,514 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.16% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 72.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $22,093, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Ford Ranger's resale value?

The current average of $22,093 sits slightly below last year's $24,593.

That price movement suggests the Ranger has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the current average or below it, you reduce the risk of taking the steepest early-value hit. Strong demand for capable midsize pickups can also help support used-market interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Ford Ranger safe?

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford says test data for this model is currently unavailable from both NHTSA and IIHS, so there are no crash-test ratings to cite here. The Ranger does offer forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking on the base trim, and Ford Co-Pilot360 adds auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer tow monitoring, lane-keep warning and assist, and forward and reverse parking sensors.

There is also a recall tied to an improper installation of the wiring sub-harness for the shifter, which could allow the vehicle to shift out of Park even when switched off. That makes recall status and repair completion especially important on any used example you consider.

Should I buy a 2019 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.16% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It returns to the U.S. with a simple, value-focused formula built around one engine and one transmission.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,503, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $22,093 average.
• It adds broader appeal through a stylish design and a stronger emphasis on technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and the market still offers a healthy share of good deals. If you can spend more for a newer model year, the 2020 is worth a look for its added polish and tech appeal.
