CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 5,805 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,924, 31.3% of 2019 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Ford Explorer 4.6 / 5 stars.
71.6% of 2019 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, mainstream midsize SUV that blends everyday practicality with stronger-than-expected performance. It sits in the Explorer’s fifth generation, which moved the model away from its earlier truck-like roots and into a more family-friendly crossover shape. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a three-row SUV with a familiar name, broad utility, and a more car-like driving character than the old body-on-frame formula suggested.
What makes this year especially distinctive is the range of powertrains and equipment available. The Explorer could be had with a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and later fifth-generation models also offered a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. It also brought modern infotainment to the nameplate, along with available comforts such as heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Safety and convenience features were a strength too, with available blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active parking assist.
At the same time, the 2019 Ford Explorer is not without compromises. The generation’s reliability record is described as average or below average, and the model never quite led its class in any single area. It was also less efficient and less spacious than some rivals, depending on what a buyer values most. Even so, its combination of usable space, available all-wheel drive, strong towing-oriented character, and a wide spread of trims and features helps explain why it remained a popular choice.

Really great. Lots of high tech features. Looks nice and is easy to handle. I would prefer the ST model for even more features and power. However for now, this one fit our budget.

How much does the 2019 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,924 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,913 |
| Year-Round High | $19,018 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,016 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.00% |
Prices have softened 11.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,826 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 4.6/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the value for money, powerful engine options, and advanced features, while the Explorer’s roomy, mainstream midsize-SUV layout makes it a practical fit if you want three-row utility and a familiar name. For shoppers who want broad everyday usefulness with a more car-like driving character, that combination is appealing. With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also highlights reliability as a positive, alongside the Explorer’s value and feature content. That said, some buyers mention minor issues such as seating comfort and the backup camera screen size, so a careful used-car inspection still matters.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk looks manageable if you verify maintenance history and condition before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, interior wear, and any signs of uneven repair quality. Because owner feedback mentions seating comfort and the backup camera screen as possible weak spots, it also helps to test those features carefully during your drive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,826 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,913, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $16,924 sits slightly below last year's $19,016.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make future resale more sensitive to mileage, condition, and equipment. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong shape, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell. A clean history and desirable features should help support demand, especially in a model that still attracts family-SUV shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,103, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,924 average.
- It brings an all-new chassis with more technology and hybrid and high-performance powertrains.
The 2019 is the better value play if you want a lower entry price and strong owner satisfaction. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer redesign with more tech and broader powertrain choices, the 2020 is the more modern pick. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2019 makes the stronger case.
