How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle cost?

Prices have softened 1.06% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 317 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owner feedback consistently points to the Beetle’s stylish design, fun driving experience, and appealing personality. The overview also frames it as a final-sendoff model with a meaningful mechanical refresh, which helps explain why it works best for you if you want a compact car with more character than the average commuter. Good and great deals make up 32.8% of listings, so there’s still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback highlights a car that feels stylish, functional, and enjoyable to live with, and it also points to the Beetle’s fun driving experience as a recurring strength. The expert commentary adds that the new engine brings smoother, on-demand power and improved fuel economy, which supports the sense that this is a well-sorted final-year update. Volkswagen also notes an extended 6-year warranty for 2018, which is a helpful ownership perk.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been neglected or modified.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?

At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-priced trim or a convertible. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork, since the Beetle’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been preserved. If you want the best ownership experience, make sure the equipment level matches what you expect before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim comes with LED running lights, heated mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, a 5-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Style & Comfort Package adds keyless ignition and entry, auto headlights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated front seats with leatherette, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The SE adds a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and VW Car-Net Security and Service. The Coast edition layers in the Style & Comfort Package content plus a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, special houndstooth cloth upholstery, a dash pad designed to look like a surfboard, and unique Deep Sea Teal paint. The Dune adds a special paint job and graphics, a larger rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels, extra ground clearance, a wider stance, unique sport seats and leather, and the content from an SE Beetle with the Premium package, but it deletes the top touchscreen and blind-spot monitoring system. The Coast edition looks like the best-value special edition if you want personality without pushing too far up the price ladder.

• Powertrain: The Beetle uses a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine rated at 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen says the engine cycle improves city fuel economy by 2 mpg, and the car is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It delivers smooth, on-demand power around town and enough passing power for the highway, even if it is not a quick car.

• Safety package: The SE adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Coast edition includes that same system. The Dune deletes blind-spot monitoring, so that’s a trim-level gap worth noting if safety tech matters to you.

• Infotainment: The base setup uses a 5-inch touchscreen, while the Style & Comfort Package upgrades you to a 6.3-inch touchscreen with HD and satellite radio plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The SE Premium package adds navigation to the upgraded 6.3-inch screen, and the Dune deletes the top touchscreen with navigation.

• Fuel efficiency: The new engine adds 2 mpg in city driving, and the Beetle returns 29 mpg combined.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Beetle trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, Coast, and Dune.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value starting point, with LED running lights, heated mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, a 5-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. If you want the Beetle’s style and core features without stretching the budget, this is the trim to start with.

• SE: This trim adds a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and VW Car-Net Security and Service. It gives you the most useful everyday upgrades, so it’s the trim that best balances comfort, convenience, and safety tech.

• Coast: This special edition builds on the S with the Style & Comfort Package and adds a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, special houndstooth cloth upholstery, a surfboard-style dash pad, and unique Deep Sea Teal paint. It’s the best choice if you want the Beetle’s personality turned up without moving into the pricier Dune.

• Dune: This edition adds a special paint job and graphics, a larger rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels, extra ground clearance, a wider stance, and unique sport seats and leather. It has the most distinctive look, but it also deletes blind-spot monitoring and the top touchscreen with navigation, so it makes the most sense if style matters more to you than feature completeness.

The SE and Coast are the trims that best preserve the Beetle’s useful safety equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 317 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.06% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,769, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?

The current average of $19,582 sits slightly below last year's $19,791.

That modest decline suggests the Beetle is holding value reasonably well, but not aggressively appreciating. For you as a future seller, that means condition and trim choice will matter a lot: cleaner examples and better-equipped versions should be easier to market than rougher or stripped-down ones. The special-edition appeal may also help certain listings stand out if they’re priced sensibly.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in front and front passenger tests and in rollover testing.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Beetle’s safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on the SE and Coast, while the Dune deletes that feature. The base car also includes a reversing camera, which helps with everyday maneuvering. The main caveat is that the government testing notes lower four-star results in some categories, so you should pay close attention to the specific trim’s equipment rather than assuming every Beetle is equally well equipped.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 model year gets a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a special Coast edition, making it a strong final-year pick with extra personality.

The bottom line: If you want the Beetle’s last and most updated version, the 2018 is the one to target. It gives you the refreshed engine, strong owner satisfaction, and a decent spread of listings to shop from. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can still find value here, but you should focus on condition and equipment rather than chasing the cheapest example.
