CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Summary
With 3,318 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,402.00, 30.7% of 2018 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Toyota Tacoma 4.62 / 5 stars.
61.5% of 2018 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a midsize truck that blends strong off-road ability with a long-running reputation for reliability. It sits in a sweet spot for buyers who want a pickup that is still nimble enough for daily driving but capable enough for active lifestyles, and it has long been known for holding its value well. That said, it is also expensive relative to comparable pickups, which is part of the Tacoma’s appeal and part of its drawback.
For 2018, the Tacoma benefits from the third generation’s broad mix of cab and bed choices, including Access Cab and Double Cab body styles with five-foot and six-foot beds. It also gets the generation’s standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, plus the available 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. Toyota Safety Sense was made standard in 2018 and brought forward-collision warning, forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and more, giving this truck a stronger safety story than many rivals of its era.
The 2018 Tacoma is not perfect, though. The base engine is described as painfully underpowered, and the crew cab is cramped even by small-truck standards. Still, for shoppers who value durability, off-road capability, and a well-equipped safety package, the 2018 Tacoma remains a compelling used-truck choice.

This was a great option for an affordable family vehicle. We loved that it was ready for camping. The price was right, it was just too far away.

Love the tacoma. Roomy but still mid-sized for economy and hauling smaller items. Love the body style, looks, and dependability!!

Great small truck. Limited tow capability until the TRD sport. Expensive but hopefully long lived.

The car has met my expectations. This is my second Tacoma LTD and it is a very nice truck. It is good value. The truck could use power seats which are available in Tacomas after 2018.

Yes — the 2018 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.62/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and good fuel economy. You also see recurring positives around its smooth ride and abundant cargo space, which makes it appealing if you want a truck that can handle daily driving and active use. The overview also fits that use case well: you get a midsize pickup that stays nimble enough for everyday errands while still offering off-road ability and a useful safety package.
With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a strong-value example if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback repeatedly highlights reliability, and it also describes the truck as dependable and comfortable enough for regular use. That combination matters if you want a used pickup you can count on over time, especially when you are weighing ownership costs against the Tacoma’s premium pricing.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying too much for a truck that has been worked hard or maintained inconsistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Toyota Tacoma?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from trucks with collision records. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, frame condition, and signs of uneven wear, since condition matters more when you are shopping a model that can command a premium. Focus on maintenance records and overall presentation, because a well-kept truck is the one most likely to justify its asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,379 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,840.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $27,410 sits slightly below last year's $28,287.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual than they were when prices were climbing. Even so, the Tacoma’s strong owner satisfaction and steady demand help support its value better than many comparable pickups.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $29,611, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $27,410 average.
- It leans harder into a no-nonsense character with a more endearing, truck-first personality.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2018 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to pay more for a newer-feeling alternative and you care less about price sensitivity, the 2019 is the secondary path to consider.
