CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Tesla Model X

Summary
With 382 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,885.00, 30.1% of 2018 Tesla Model Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Tesla Model X 4.3 / 5 stars.
69.6% of 2018 Model X models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Tesla Model X stands out as a midsize crossover that was based on the same platform as the Tesla Model S and could seat up to seven passengers. Its most distinctive feature is the double-hinged Falcon Wing rear doors, which open upward instead of outward, giving the SUV a look and personality unlike most family vehicles. It also offered two- and three-row configurations, making it one of the more flexible electric SUVs of its era.
For 2018, Tesla had already added a split-folding second-row seat on seven-passenger models, and maximum range had risen to 295 miles. The Model X also came with dual-motor all-wheel drive, a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen, a panoramic glass roof, a frunk for extra storage, navigation with real-time traffic updates, free charging using Tesla’s Supercharger network, LED headlights, keyless entry, power Falcon doors, and a power liftgate. Ludicrous Mode was available on the 90D models and standard on the P100D models, and the semi-autonomous Enhanced Autopilot system was also available.
That combination of advanced tech, strong performance, and unusual packaging made the 2018 Model X appealing to buyers who wanted an electric SUV with real family usefulness and a premium feel. At the same time, its third row was cramped, the Falcon Wing doors could be tricky in tight spaces, and Tesla’s build quality issues were a known concern, so it was a vehicle with clear strengths and some practical compromises.

Overrated. Very expensive to maintain. Depreciate enormously compare to other electric cars

Well, there is a limitation to my review. I never drove the car. I have driven other Tesla’s, and I am impressed with their performance, handling, and multiple advanced technical features. The model X is extremely utilitarian, has a gorgeous futuristic interior, and seems very capable as an all-around daily driver as well as giving sports car like performance and the utility of an SUV. So if I had to own only one car as an enthusiast, this might be the one. The only drawback is the same as all other E-vehicles, which is their range. As long as you don’t mind spending 15-30 minutes at a supercharging station on a long trip, this is not that big a deal.

Luxury car with technology package without compromise. The falcon door, like the door on minivan, has real benefit. We upgraded from model 3, everything feels better.

How much does the 2018 Tesla Model X cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,878 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,009.26 |
| Year-Round High | $27,455.62 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,001 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.16% |
Prices have softened 4.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 386 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $25,009.26, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Tesla Model X a good car?
Generally — the 4.3/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the futuristic interior, great technology, and strong performance, and many also describe it as comfortable and capable for daily driving. The Model X’s family-friendly flexibility and premium feel make it appealing if you want an electric SUV with standout packaging and advanced features. With 23.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Tesla Model X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a vehicle that many owners find dependable in everyday use, with praise for its comfort and capability over time. At the same time, some owners mention expensive maintenance and depreciation, so long-term ownership costs can still matter even when the driving experience is strong. For used buyers, that means reliability may be acceptable, but you should still budget carefully and verify the condition of any example you consider.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Tesla Model X?
At 69.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership patterns before you get too far into the process. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, doors, and overall condition, since fit and finish issues can matter a lot on this model. It also makes sense to focus on how the vehicle has been maintained and whether any visible wear lines up with the seller’s description.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Tesla Model X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 23.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

- Clean inventory: 69.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,009.26, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Tesla Model X's resale value?
The current average of $25,878 sits slightly below last year's $27,001.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also mean future resale gains are limited if depreciation continues. If you plan to sell later, the best protection is buying well and choosing a clean, well-kept example that should stay attractive to the next shopper. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Tesla Model X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 23.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should focus on the 2018 if you want a well-liked Model X with a softer price than last year and enough inventory to shop selectively. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth comparing, but the 2018 remains a sensible target when you find a clean example with strong history and a price near the lower end of the range.
