CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Tesla Model X

Summary
With 377 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,194, 31.8% of 2018 Tesla Model Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Tesla Model X 4.3 / 5 stars.
75.1% of 2018 Model X models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Tesla Model X stands out as a midsize crossover that was built around electric performance and unusual design. It shares about 30% of its content with the Tesla Model S, and its signature feature is the double-hinged Falcon Wing rear doors that open up instead of out. It also offers two- and three-row configurations with seating for up to seven passengers, which helps explain why it has long appealed to buyers looking for a family-friendly electric SUV with a more distinctive shape than most rivals.
For 2018, Tesla had already dropped the base 60D model in 2017 and added a new 100 kWh battery with boosted range and standard adaptive air suspension. In 2018, Tesla also dropped the 90D model, added a split-folding second-row seat on seven-passenger models, and raised maximum range to 295 miles. Standard equipment at launch included a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen, a panoramic glass roof, a frunk, navigation with real-time traffic updates, free charging using Tesla’s Supercharger network, LED headlights, keyless entry, power Falcon doors, and a power liftgate. The Model X’s strengths were its advanced tech, fast acceleration, and impressive battery range, while its drawbacks included a cramped third row and Falcon Wing doors that can be tricky in tight spaces.

Overrated. Very expensive to maintain. Depreciate enormously compare to other electric cars

Well, there is a limitation to my review. I never drove the car. I have driven other Tesla’s, and I am impressed with their performance, handling, and multiple advanced technical features. The model X is extremely utilitarian, has a gorgeous futuristic interior, and seems very capable as an all-around daily driver as well as giving sports car like performance and the utility of an SUV. So if I had to own only one car as an enthusiast, this might be the one. The only drawback is the same as all other E-vehicles, which is their range. As long as you don’t mind spending 15-30 minutes at a supercharging station on a long trip, this is not that big a deal.

Luxury car with technology package without compromise. The falcon door, like the door on minivan, has real benefit. We upgraded from model 3, everything feels better.

What is the 2018 Tesla Model X's resale value?
The current average of $26,170 sits slightly below last year's $26,963.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer but may temper short-term resale upside if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the Model X’s strong tech appeal and family-friendly layout can help keep demand steady among shoppers looking for a distinctive electric SUV. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you’re more likely to preserve value than if you overpay at the start.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Tesla Model X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the 2018 Model X’s mix of strong owner satisfaction, distinctive design, and softer pricing, it makes sense as the primary target year. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the broader market to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing a specific badge year.
