CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Tesla Model X

Summary
With 241 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,664, 29.9% of 2016 Tesla Model Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Tesla Model X 4.31 / 5 stars.
75.1% of 2016 Model X models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Tesla Model X stands out as one of the earliest widely available all-electric SUVs in the U.S., and it brought a distinctly Tesla approach to the three-row family vehicle. It shares its platform with the Tesla Model S and uses the same low, curvy profile, but its defining feature is the double-hinged Falcon Wing rear doors that open upward instead of outward. That unusual packaging helps give the Model X a premium, futuristic feel, and it also offers two- and three-row configurations with seating for up to seven passengers.
For 2016, the Model X launched with three battery pack options, and the top P100D version delivered 532 horsepower and 289 miles of estimated range. Dual-motor all-wheel drive was standard, and the standard equipment list was unusually rich for the time, including a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen, a panoramic glass roof, a frunk, navigation with real-time traffic updates, free charging on Tesla’s Supercharger network, LED headlights, keyless entry, power Falcon doors, and a power liftgate. It also offered Enhanced Autopilot, while Ludicrous Mode on the higher-performance versions gave it very quick acceleration.
The tradeoffs are part of the story, too. The 2016 Model X was known for build quality issues, and the Falcon Wing doors could be tricky in tight spaces. It also lacked Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and owners have noted concerns about repair costs for some components. Even so, its combination of performance, range, advanced tech, and standout design makes the 2016 Tesla Model X appealing to buyers who want an electric SUV that feels genuinely different from the norm.

The car is great, but I don’t recommend. If you drive everyday more than 30 miles round trip, gasoline car is better, cheaper and safer for long term. 10 years Old electric car most likely battery will be your “big” concern. It drain super fast and it cost too much to replace $15k-$20k. The price for Electric vehicle after 10 years should be $23k or less. When the car problems come out, it’ll cost you a lot of money to fix lsuch as tires replace, compression bush, 12v battery, high voltage battery, coolant, filters, etc. The car doesn’t have sides cameras, so it can’t fully self-driving.

I have had a Model S for almost eight years. Been trying to get the wife to come aboard the EV train since 2016. She agreed recently and when the car was delivered, I wasnt there. She called me all giddy with excitement. She has had very nice cars for a long time. First time she was really excited. The vehicle is decades ahead of everyone else

How much does the 2016 Tesla Model X cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,603 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,362 |
| Year-Round High | $24,413 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,936 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.57% |
Prices have softened 5.57% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 237 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare before you commit.
Is the 2016 Tesla Model X a good car?
Generally — the 2016 Tesla Model X earns a 4.31/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its performance, comfort, and innovative features, and many also like the unique design of the gull-wing doors and the spacious interior. For you, that means this model year makes the most sense if you want a three-row electric SUV with a premium, distinctive feel rather than a conventional family hauler. With 29.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Tesla Model X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.31/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that can feel dependable in daily use, especially when you value its performance and comfort over simplicity. At the same time, the same reviews note high repair costs for some components, so long-term ownership risk is more about expensive fixes than a lack of appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Tesla Model X?
At 74.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to body condition, door operation, and any signs of uneven wear or repair work. Because this model has a premium feature set, you should focus on how well everything works, not just whether it looks good in photos.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Tesla Model X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 237 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.57% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,362, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Tesla Model X's resale value?
The current average of $22,603 sits slightly below last year's $23,936.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can matter if you plan to sell later. For you, the upside is that buying at a softer price today may reduce the amount of value left to lose in the near term. Well-kept examples should still attract attention because shoppers in this segment tend to respond to standout design and strong feature content.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.31/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Tesla Model X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.31/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the earliest widely available Model X and you value its distinctive design, strong owner satisfaction, and softer pricing, the 2016 is the primary path to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a slightly newer example offers a better mix of condition and value for the money.
