CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Tesla Model X

Summary
With 234 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,432, 29.5% of 2016 Tesla Model X listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Tesla Model X 4.31 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Tesla Model X stands out as one of the earliest widely available all-electric SUVs in the U.S., and it brought a distinctly Tesla approach to the segment. It shares its platform and much of its content with the Tesla Model S, but it is a larger midsize crossover with two- and three-row seating for up to seven passengers. Its most recognizable feature is the double-hinged Falcon Wing rear doors, which open upward instead of outward, giving the Model X a design and personality unlike conventional three-row SUVs.
For 2016, the Model X launched with three battery pack options, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen. Standard equipment also included a panoramic glass roof, a frunk, navigation with real-time traffic updates, free charging on Tesla’s Supercharger network, LED headlights, keyless entry, power Falcon doors, and a power liftgate. The top P100D models were rated at 532 horsepower and 289 miles of estimated range, while Ludicrous Mode was available on the 90D and standard on the P100D, helping the SUV deliver very quick acceleration. Buyers looking at this model year should also note its drawbacks: the third row is cramped, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included, and the Falcon Wing doors can be tricky in tight spaces.

The car is great, but I don’t recommend. If you drive everyday more than 30 miles round trip, gasoline car is better, cheaper and safer for long term. 10 years Old electric car most likely battery will be your “big” concern. It drain super fast and it cost too much to replace $15k-$20k. The price for Electric vehicle after 10 years should be $23k or less. When the car problems come out, it’ll cost you a lot of money to fix lsuch as tires replace, compression bush, 12v battery, high voltage battery, coolant, filters, etc. The car doesn’t have sides cameras, so it can’t fully self-driving.

I have had a Model S for almost eight years. Been trying to get the wife to come aboard the EV train since 2016. She agreed recently and when the car was delivered, I wasnt there. She called me all giddy with excitement. She has had very nice cars for a long time. First time she was really excited. The vehicle is decades ahead of everyone else

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience for many drivers, with repeated praise for comfort and performance. At the same time, some shoppers note that repairs for certain components can be expensive, so long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully on a used example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Tesla Model X?
At 69.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body alignment, door operation, and overall condition, since this model’s standout features can be more complex than those on a conventional SUV. Pay close attention to how the vehicle has been maintained and whether any repairs were documented clearly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Tesla Model X?

- Deal availability: 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 234 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.54% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,368, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Tesla Model X's resale value?
The current average of $22,422 sits slightly below last year's $24,251.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can limit upside if you buy at the wrong price. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is buying well and keeping the vehicle in strong condition. Demand should remain supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and distinctive appeal.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Tesla Model X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.54% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced entry point into this model line and you find a clean, well-documented example, the 2016 is a sensible choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, it’s also worth comparing nearby years to see whether a slightly newer example offers a better balance of condition and value.
