CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Subaru Forester
Summary
With 3,133 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,247, 34.6% of 2018 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Subaru Forester 4.75 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that emphasizes space, safety, and everyday usability over flash. It offers a roomy interior and large cargo area, and its standard symmetrical all-wheel drive gives it the kind of all-weather confidence that has long defined the Forester name. Buyers looking for a straightforward, capable used SUV will also appreciate that this generation was built around comfort and refinement, with a focus on improved ride quality and visibility.
For 2018, the Forester also benefits from the fourth generation’s later updates. The EyeSight driver assistance suite was standard on all models by 2018, and the 2017 refresh brought revised styling, updated headlights, extra soundproofing, and thicker glass to reduce road noise. That makes this model year appealing if you want a Forester that feels more polished than earlier versions while still keeping the brand’s familiar practicality. The tradeoff is that it is not especially exciting to drive, and the CVT can feel sluggish, so shoppers prioritizing performance may find it less engaging than its usefulness suggests.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

LOVE my new 2018 Subaru Outback! I was shocked to see how roomy it is...Im 511 & my husband is 65 and our long legs can very comfortably stretch out in the front. My husband can even fit comfortably in the back! I also love the heated front seats...great for my achy back. Love the steerling wheel controls...easy to navigate. Love the brake assist & lane assist. The brake assist has already helped keep from rear-ending someone who stopped short in front of me! I wasnt considering an Outback when searching for a new car, but Im sooooo happy I listened to my sister (who has loved her Outback for the past 8 years & who is 62...also needs a lot of room) and test drove some. The standard safety features & super roomy interior really make me feel like this was the perfect car for me & my family.

Very nice comfortable seating. Lots of leg room, user friendly operations and knob/button placement. Interior lighting and dashboard are excellent, very nice sound system, Car sits higher than older Foresters which is great, feels solid and sturdy like a luxury suv. Large moonroof, very powerful cold a/c, smooth mostly quiet ride, extra large rear cargo space and push button close hatch is awesome. Back up camera and lane keeper features very helpful. Only negative is no a/c vents for backseat passengers.

How much does the 2018 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,248 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,918 |
| Year-Round High | $16,868 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,782 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.18% |
Prices have softened 3.18% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,112 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the spacious interior, safety features, and smooth driving experience, while also highlighting comfortable seating and user-friendly technology. For you, that makes this a sensible choice if you want a practical compact SUV with room, visibility, and everyday usability. With 36.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is meaningful shopping opportunity if you are selective.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on comfort and ease of living with the vehicle over time. Some owners do mention minor issues, but the overall tone suggests this is a model many people feel they can count on.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the concept of the vehicle and more about finding one that has been well maintained and not worn down by prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with past damage. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, alignment, and any signs of uneven wear or repair work. You should also focus on overall condition, since a well-kept Forester is more likely to deliver the practical ownership experience you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,112 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.18% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,918, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $16,248 sits slightly below last year's $16,782.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, which can temper resale upside in the near term. If you buy now, your future resale value will likely depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. A clean history and strong presentation matter more when the broader market is already showing some price pressure.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.18% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,639, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,248 average.
- It offers a value-focused, practical package with a broader performance-oriented option.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,790, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $16,248 average.
- It adds standard advanced safety features and easier everyday usability.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2018 if you want a well-liked Forester with strong practicality and a market that still offers some deal potential. If price is your top priority, the 2017 is the better value path; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling option, the 2019 is worth a look.
