Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that emphasizes space, safety, and everyday usability. It belongs to the fourth generation, which brought major improvements in efficiency, safety, and technology, along with more interior room and better outward visibility. That combination helped make the Forester appealing to buyers who wanted a vehicle that was easy to live with, especially if cargo space and a roomy cabin mattered more than flash.
For 2018, the Forester also benefited from the fourth generation’s broader updates. EyeSight was standard on all models by 2018, and the lineup included a touchscreen infotainment system, keyless access and start, and a power liftgate on available trims. The XT models added a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, giving shoppers a more powerful option within the range. Subaru also added a Black Edition for 2018, with black alloy wheels and black exterior trim, which gave the SUV a darker, more distinctive look.
At the same time, the 2018 Forester was not the most engaging SUV to drive, and the CVT could feel sluggish. Even so, it remained a strong choice for buyers who valued standard all-wheel drive, good visibility, and a reputation for practicality and reliability.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

LOVE my new 2018 Subaru Outback! I was shocked to see how roomy it is...Im 511 & my husband is 65 and our long legs can very comfortably stretch out in the front. My husband can even fit comfortably in the back! I also love the heated front seats...great for my achy back. Love the steerling wheel controls...easy to navigate. Love the brake assist & lane assist. The brake assist has already helped keep from rear-ending someone who stopped short in front of me! I wasnt considering an Outback when searching for a new car, but Im sooooo happy I listened to my sister (who has loved her Outback for the past 8 years & who is 62...also needs a lot of room) and test drove some. The standard safety features & super roomy interior really make me feel like this was the perfect car for me & my family.

Very nice comfortable seating. Lots of leg room, user friendly operations and knob/button placement. Interior lighting and dashboard are excellent, very nice sound system, Car sits higher than older Foresters which is great, feels solid and sturdy like a luxury suv. Large moonroof, very powerful cold a/c, smooth mostly quiet ride, extra large rear cargo space and push button close hatch is awesome. Back up camera and lane keeper features very helpful. Only negative is no a/c vents for backseat passengers.

How much does the 2018 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,922 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,918 |
| Year-Round High | $16,868 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,591 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.03% |
Prices have softened 4.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,085 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.8/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise the spacious interior, safety features, and comfortable seating, and they also like the user-friendly technology. For you, that makes the Forester a strong fit if you want a practical compact SUV with everyday usability, especially when cargo space and a roomy cabin matter more than flash. With 35.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a reputation for reliability, with drivers describing it as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. The model’s practical design and strong owner approval suggest it can be a sensible long-term choice if you want a used SUV you can count on. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is making sure a specific example has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up avoidable wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report to confirm accident records, title status, and service history. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive or the vehicle has higher mileage. Focus on overall condition, including signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and how the vehicle drives in everyday conditions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,085 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,918, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $15,922 sits slightly below last year's $16,591.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and documentation will matter more because buyers tend to reward clean history and well-kept examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
