CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Summary
With 158 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,264.00, 31.6% of 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata 5 / 5 stars.
64.6% of 2018 MX-5 Miata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands out because it stays true to the roadster formula that made the name famous: a small, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive two-seater built for driving enjoyment rather than outright speed. Mazda’s long-running emphasis on fun, reliability, and simplicity is a big part of its appeal, and the Miata’s reputation for lively handling and rock-solid dependability helps explain why it has remained such a benchmark in its class. It is also one of the least expensive used sports cars in its generation, which makes its playful character feel even more accessible.
For 2018, the Miata’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder was still rated at 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Mazda also offered the standard cloth-top roadster and the RF with its removable hardtop and targa-style roof, giving buyers a choice between a lighter open-air setup and a quieter, more secure-feeling alternative. The car’s quick steering and excellent feedback are major strengths, and its chassis makes ordinary driving feel engaging. At the same time, it is still a very small car, so highway cruising can feel jittery, the cabin can be cramped, and cargo space is limited.

Fun car to drive. Good mpg, it isnt an every day driver and it does need premium fuel. The trunk is small but it would carry a few duffle bags for a long trip. The manual tranny is tight, fast shifting and a short throw. It was just what I was looking for and it is all I expected it to be.

The definitive entry level sports car. Would more power be nice? Sure. Is this car still more fun to drive than others with twice the horsepower? Absolutely.

The GT model has everything you need for touring. Heated seats, lane departure warning, navigation, self leveling LED headlights. It is my daily driver and I have no regrets getting a RF GT. I was between the MX-5 RF GT and the Toyota 86. 86 is definitely more practical when it comes to storage and cabin comfort. But it is nowhere as fun or good looking.

Yes — the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its fun-to-drive character, nimble handling, and the smiles it delivers on every ride. The tradeoff is that it is not built for maximum practicality, so storage space is limited and taller drivers may feel cramped.
If you want a lightweight roadster that prioritizes driving enjoyment over everyday utility, this model year fits that use case well. With 28.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a meaningful chance to find attractive pricing.
Is the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with the Miata’s reputation for reliability showing up clearly in the reviews. That kind of confidence matters if you want a small sports car you can count on over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding one that has been cared for properly and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, roof, and interior condition, since this model’s small size and open-air design make wear and repair history especially important.
Focus on how the car was maintained and whether any prior damage was repaired well, because condition matters more than mileage alone in a roadster like this.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 168 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,225.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata's resale value?
The current average of $21,231 sits slightly below last year's $21,714.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to sell soon. Even so, a well-kept Miata should remain appealing because buyers continue to value its driving character and strong owner satisfaction.
If you maintain the car well and keep documentation organized, you improve your odds of standing out when it is time to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $21,075, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $21,231 average.
- It offers uncommon hardtop versatility.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $25,739, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $21,231 average.
- It sharpens the Miata formula for pure driving enjoyment.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of owner satisfaction, current pricing, and available inventory, the 2018 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2017 is the better value-oriented alternative, while the 2019 makes sense only if you are willing to pay more for a newer take on the same core formula.
