What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda MAZDA6?

At 50.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint match, tires, and braking feel. Because the market includes a sizable number of cars with prior damage, condition matters more than usual when you compare listings. It’s also smart to focus on how the car drives and whether the cabin equipment works as expected, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on its upscale feel.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport trim includes standard LED headlights, push-button start, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera, while the Touring adds 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, a sunroof, auto wipers and high beams, heated front seats with driver power, and faux leather. The Grand Touring and higher trims add more luxury and technology, and the Signature brings the most upscale materials and equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder makes 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged 2.5-liter adds 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The base engine is paired with a 6-speed manual on Sport, while higher trims use a 6-speed automatic.
• Safety package: The available i-Activesense package adds forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist. The base Sport already includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a rear-view camera.
• Infotainment: The Mazda Connect system uses an 8-inch touchscreen with rotary-dial control, and smartphone integration arrives through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The available head-up display adds traffic sign recognition and turn-by-turn guidance.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine returns 26 city mpg and 35 highway mpg, while the turbocharged version returns 23 city, 31 highway, and 26 combined mpg.

Which 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?

The 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want standard LED headlights, push-button start, an 8-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera. It’s the trim that gives you the core Mazda6 experience without pushing the price too far.
• Touring: This is the best-value upgrade for many shoppers because it adds the features that make the car feel more complete, including 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, a sunroof, heated front seats, and faux leather. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, this is the trim to target.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine, upgraded infotainment, an 11-speaker stereo, navigation, and satellite radio. It’s the trim that most clearly shifts the Mazda6 toward a more premium and more powerful personality.
• Grand Touring Reserve: This trim adds real luxury touches such as a heated steering wheel, memory settings for the driver, real leather, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, adaptive front LEDs, and a head-up display. It makes sense if comfort and upscale features matter more than value.
• Signature: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious Mazda6, with a digital cluster, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, Nappa leather, microfiber faux suede, real wood trim, and upgraded interior lighting. It’s the trim to buy if you want the car to feel closest to a near-luxury sedan.

The safety package is available for a modest price on the Sport, and that makes it an especially smart trim to consider if you want strong value without moving up the lineup.

The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 404 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.94% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 50.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,791, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?

The current average of $16,212 sits slightly below last year's $16,704.

That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than on broad market momentum alone. Well-equipped versions with strong presentation and clean history should hold up better than rougher examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?

The Mazda6 earns five-star ratings in all NHTSA tests except rollover and front passenger side tests, which earned four-star ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The base Sport trim comes standard with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a rear-view camera, and the available i-Activesense package adds forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist. That means you can get a strong safety setup without moving to a higher trim.

One caveat is braking performance, which the expert review calls disappointing compared with some rivals.

Should I buy a 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 50.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.94% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 model year adds a slight redesign, a new Signature trim, and the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, which help it feel more upscale than earlier versions.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, style, and available premium features, the 2018 is the right year to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find attractive listings, but you should be selective about condition and history so you don’t give back the savings later.

How does the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 compare to the 2018 Honda Accord?

Our experts score the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 7.8/10 and the 2018 Honda Accord 8.2/10.

The Mazda6 leans harder into style, upscale cabin feel, and driving enjoyment, while the Accord brings stronger efficiency, more listings, and a slightly higher expert score. If you want the more premium-feeling sedan, the Mazda6 makes a strong case; if you want broader market availability and better mpg, the Accord has the edge.
