Overview

The Mazda6 competes in the midsize family sedan category, along with the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Subaru Legacy, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, and Kia Optima. For 2020, it sees no major changes but will feature a new key fob.
Mazda offers two engines in the MAZDA6. The base unit comprises a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine good for 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, plus cylinder deactivation. You can upgrade to a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque using 93-octane premium fuel. That option also gets you bigger front ventilated brake discs. Both engines come with front-wheel drive (FWD) and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The base mill is rated for 26 mpg city, 35 highway, and 29 combined, while the more-powerful one gets estimates of 23, 31, and 26.
Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature trims make up the Mazda6 lineup. The Sport bundles 17-inch alloy wheels, auto-leveling LED headlights, LED taillights, an 8-inch infotainment system, front USB ports, 6 speakers, Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and keyless start. Other trims enjoy a 6- or 8-way power driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, keyless access, a power moonroof, larger wheels, rear USB ports, a Bose 11-speaker audio system, satellite radio, adaptive front lighting, leather upholstery, a windshield-wiper de-icer, a 6-way power passenger’s seat, and premium LED headlights.
For 2020, the entire i-Activsense safety suite comes standard on the Mazda6. That includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a reversing camera. Optional upgrades include a 360-degree monitor, a heads-up display, and parking sensors. Most Mazda models achieved top scores in their most recent round of crash tests, and the Mazda6 is no exception.

Needed a commuting car for my wife and did some research and test drives on mid-size sedans. Test drove a 2022 Toyota Camry as well as a 2022 Honda Accord. After my brother-in-law recommended Mazda I did my research and finally test drove a 2020 Mazda 6 Grand Touring. BOOM!!! This car is amazing: literally blew away the Camry and Acord in every aspect (acceleration, quietness, interior and exterior and sooooo fun to drive). I feel like we got a luxury vehicle for the price of a Camry or Acord. I know time will tell regarding reliability but if first impressions meaning anything this car is the sweetest vehicle I have ever driven!!!

Owners consistently praise the standout design, comfortable interior, sporty feel, and engaging handling. The feedback also suggests the car delivers a driving experience and feature set that many shoppers find more appealing than some rivals.
With 26.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a strong-value example if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes that the car feels dependable and enjoyable over time, with comments pointing to a trouble-free ownership experience and a vehicle you can count on for everyday driving. That kind of response usually matters most when you want a used sedan that still feels solid after years on the road.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about finding one with a clean history and consistent maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive.
Focus your inspection on overall condition, repair quality, and signs of uneven wear so you can avoid paying top dollar for a car with hidden issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA6?
This is a moderate market, so you can buy now if the right car appears, but selective shoppers still have room to negotiate.
- Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.85% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,863.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?
The current average of $18,600 sits slightly below last year's $18,951.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept example with strong documentation should hold up better than one with a questionable history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $20,133, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,600 average.
- It adds a more distinctive, driver-focused character with stylish design and premium-feeling materials.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year and a slightly more refined overall presentation, the 2021 is the better secondary path for shoppers who care less about price and more about the latest version of the same appeal.
