How much does the 2018 GMC Terrain cost?

Prices have softened 9.42% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,696 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good car?

Yes — the 2018 GMC Terrain earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features available, especially in higher trim levels. Many also describe it as smooth and enjoyable to drive, with the 2.0L turbo engine drawing especially positive feedback. In use-case terms, it fits you best if you want a compact crossover with a roomy cabin and a more premium-feeling feature set, even if the overall package is less convincing under closer scrutiny.

32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that people feel good about living with over time, especially because of its comfort, spaciousness, and generally trouble-free day-to-day character. The expert drive notes also suggest a dependable-feeling powertrain when you choose the stronger engine, with the 2.0L turbo described as the more satisfying option. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by the issues that can show up in a higher-mileage crossover.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Terrain?

At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a long option list. Focus on body condition, evidence of prior repairs, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and trim level match the seller’s description. If you’re comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to the cleanest history and the most complete maintenance records.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Terrain is offered in four trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SL is the most stripped-down version, with FWD only, the 1.5-liter engine only, and limited paint choices, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and upscale touches.
• Powertrain: You can choose among a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. The 2.0-liter is the stronger choice if you want more satisfying acceleration, while the 1.5-liter is the standard engine.
• Safety package: Standard Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are included. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are available, but adaptive cruise control and a higher-speed automatic emergency braking system are missing.
• Infotainment: The Terrain uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar subscription services, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, an SD card reader, and four USB data ports. Wireless device charging is included on Denali.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter test vehicle averaged 22.6 mpg, and the standard 1.5-liter engine was described as delivering disappointing fuel economy of 23.3 mpg.

Which 2018 GMC Terrain trim should I buy?

The 2018 GMC Terrain is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SL: This is the entry point, but it is very limited in practice because it comes only with FWD, the 1.5-liter engine, and a narrow set of paint choices. It makes sense only if you want the lowest possible starting price and can live with the bare-bones setup.
• SLE: This is the trim most shoppers should start with because it opens up the lineup beyond the stripped-down SL and gives you a more realistic ownership experience. If you want the best value, this is the trim to focus on first.
• SLT: This is the better choice if you want more comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to the top trim. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel but don’t need every luxury feature.
• Denali: This is the most upscale version, with the richest feature content, including the premium audio and wireless charging mentioned in the test vehicle. It’s the right pick if you want the most premium Terrain experience and are willing to pay for it.

Standard Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are included, while other driver-assistance systems are mostly optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Terrain?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,696 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.42% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,708, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 GMC Terrain's resale value?

The current average of $13,708 sits slightly below last year's $15,134.

That softer pricing suggests the Terrain has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you may be better positioned to limit your loss when it’s time to sell. The market still shows enough inventory and deal activity to keep pricing competitive, so condition and trim choice will matter a lot.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain safe?

The 2018 Terrain gets a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with three-star rear seat side-impact protection.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard Teen Driver technology lets you set limits and review vehicle-use reports, and Rear Seat Reminder is also standard. The safety content also notes that adaptive cruise control and a higher-speed automatic emergency braking system are missing, which is a notable gap for a brand-new design. The rear-seat side-impact result is the biggest caution flag for used buyers, especially if you regularly carry children or other passengers in the back.

Should I buy a 2018 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 stands out for its redesigned look and available 2.0L turbo power, but it also carries a weaker safety impression than you’d want in a brand-new design.

The bottom line: If you want a used Terrain and you find a clean, well-priced 2018 example, it can make sense as a value play because prices have eased and inventory is decent. If safety confidence is your top priority, or if you want a more convincing all-around package, you should also consider other years or alternatives before committing.

How does the 2018 GMC Terrain compare to the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox?

Our experts score the 2018 GMC Terrain 6.2/10 and the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox 7.2/10.

The Terrain and Equinox share the same basic 1.5L engine and similar market positioning, but the Equinox comes out ahead overall. The Terrain has a slightly higher average used price and fewer listings, while the Equinox offers better highway fuel economy and a larger pool of inventory to shop from. If you want the more distinctive GMC styling and are willing to accept the tradeoffs, the Terrain still has appeal; if you want the stronger all-around value, the Equinox is the easier recommendation.
