What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford F-150?

At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing or off-road use in its past. Focus on wear items, evidence of heavy-duty use, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the way you plan to use it. If you’re shopping higher trims, make sure the added features actually work as intended and haven’t been neglected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from the work-focused XL to the Limited, with the XL offering very little beyond plastic bumpers, cloth seats, steel wheels, a reversing camera, and an auxiliary jack. The XLT adds power windows and locks, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and chrome bumpers, while the Lariat brings leather-trimmed front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, Sync 3, and more comfort features. The King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited add progressively more upscale or specialized equipment, with the Limited standing out for its panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and massaging front seats.
• Powertrain: The truck offers a 3.3-liter V6, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, and a 5.0-liter V8. The 3.3-liter pairs with a 6-speed automatic, while the other engines use a 10-speed automatic, and you can get rear-wheel drive or available 4WD. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost is the most efficient setup, while the 3.5-liter EcoBoost delivers the strongest towing figure in the lineup.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, tire pressure monitoring, traction control, front- and side-impact airbags, and trailer sway control. A 360-degree camera is standard on the Limited and available on the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Raptor. Forward-collision warning and avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control are standard on the Limited and available on other models.
• Infotainment: The base XL has only an AM/FM stereo with four speakers and an auxiliary audio input. Sync 3 centers on an 8-inch color screen and adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, with Bluetooth on the XLT and Sync 3 standard on most trims except the Raptor. Wi-Fi hotspot capability and FordPass features are also available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with the 10-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined. The Limited with the V6 and 4WD returns 17 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined. The Raptor returns 15 mpg city, 18 highway, and 16 combined.

Which 2018 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2018 Ford F-150 is offered in 7 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the work-truck starting point, so you should choose it only if you want the lowest-cost path into the F-150 and don’t need much beyond the basics. It’s the right fit if you value utility over comfort, but it’s also the trim where you give up the most convenience and tech.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the everyday essentials you’ll actually notice, including power windows and locks, Bluetooth, a USB port, and nicer exterior touches. If you want a sensible balance of price and livability, this is the trim to focus on first.
• Lariat: This is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale truck without jumping into luxury-trim pricing. Heated and ventilated front seats, leather-trimmed seating, Sync 3, and dual-zone climate control make it a strong choice for buyers who spend a lot of time behind the wheel.
• King Ranch: Choose this if you want a more distinctive premium feel, plus features like heated rear seats, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. It’s a good fit if comfort and presentation matter as much as capability.
• Platinum: This trim leans into style and refinement with a unique grille, 20-inch polished wheels, wood interior accents, and navigation. It suits you if you want a more polished truck without going all the way to the top.
• Raptor: This is the off-road-focused choice, with a wider body, unique grille, skid plates, and beefed-up shocks. Buy it if your priorities are trail capability and high-speed dirt-road performance rather than everyday value.
• Limited: This is the top luxury pick, with nearly every major option already included, plus a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and massaging front seats. It’s the right choice if you want the most feature-rich F-150 and are willing to pay for it.

The Limited also gets the most advanced safety equipment, while several driver-assistance features are available on lower trims rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford F-150?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 9,603 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 71.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,487, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $24,000 sits slightly below last year's $24,866.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the truck well, you’re starting from a more favorable price point than last year’s average buyer. Strong demand for a well-rounded full-size pickup should also help support used-market interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2018 Ford F-150 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a reversing camera, tire pressure monitoring, traction control, front- and side-impact airbags, and trailer sway control. The available driver-assistance suite adds forward-collision warning and avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control that can stop and go with traffic. A 360-degree camera is standard on the Limited and available on the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Raptor.

One thing to keep in mind is that several advanced safety features are not standard on lower trims, so you’ll want to verify exactly what’s included on any used listing you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2018 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 delivers a well-rounded mix of capability, efficiency, and everyday livability.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $21,330, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $24,000 average.
• It brings back the Raptor on a redesigned platform with serious off-road hardware.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $26,097, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $24,000 average.
• It stays current with modest updates while keeping the F-150 formula familiar.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, capability, and feature content, the 2018 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2017 can save you money, while the 2019 makes sense if you want a slightly newer truck and don’t mind paying more.
