Is the 2018 Ford Expedition a good car?

Yes — 4.73/5. The expert rating is 8.5/10.

The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and comfort, and they also call out the available features and good fuel economy for a large SUV. For you, that means the Expedition fits especially well if you want a full-size SUV for family hauling, cargo, and towing without giving up everyday comfort.

There are 35.3% good or great deals in the market, which suggests you can still find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.

Is the 2018 Ford Expedition reliable?

Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for its spaciousness, power, comfort, and good fuel economy for its size. The expert review also emphasizes that it is comfortable, capacious, and quick, which supports the idea that it can be a strong long-term family hauler when maintained properly.

At the same time, some owners mention high repair costs, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and budget for ownership costs beyond the purchase price.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Expedition?

At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, repair quality, and signs of prior damage or poor repairs. Because this is a large, expensive SUV, it also makes sense to check that the steering, suspension, and driver-assistance features behave as expected during a thorough test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard-length Expedition and the Expedition MAX are the main body styles to compare, and the MAX adds an extra foot of length and 16.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. The XLT, Limited, and Platinum trims are the consumer-focused choices, while the XL is aimed at fleet buyers.
• Powertrain: You get a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and Platinum trim adds 25 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque. The 10-speed automatic and available driving modes help the SUV feel responsive, and maximum towing capacity reaches 9,300 pounds.
• Safety package: Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist are included in the available driver-assistance suite. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, along with front and rear parking sensors.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 uses an 8-inch display and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Sync Connect services. Wireless device charging, navigation, a 360-degree surround-view camera system, and a B&O Play premium sound system are available.
• Fuel efficiency: The review notes an 18.3 mpg result on the test loop.

Which 2018 Ford Expedition trim should I buy?

The 2018 Ford Expedition is offered in 4 trim levels: XLT, Limited, Platinum, and XL.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point for shoppers who want the Expedition’s core space, power, and towing ability without paying for the higher-end extras. It makes the most sense if you want the best value and do not need the upscale equipment found higher up the range.
• Limited: This is the trim that best balances equipment and price, especially if you want a more upscale cabin and access to more available technology and driver-assistance features. It is the best-value choice for many used buyers.
• Platinum: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with more upscale details and extra power. It suits you best if you want the most premium version of the Expedition and are willing to pay for it.
• XL: This trim is intended for fleet sales to government and business entities, so it is usually not the one most retail shoppers should target.

Safety-package note: the available driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies are a major part of the higher-spec trims, so compare equipment carefully if those features matter to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Expedition?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, but the best examples can still move quickly.

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,052 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.53% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,677, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Ford Expedition's resale value?

The current average of $19,677 sits slightly below last year's $22,497.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the SUV in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of depreciation over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Ford Expedition safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The 2018 Expedition offers adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. It also includes a reversing camera and MyKey programmable technology, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic collision notification are available.

The review also notes some caveats: the blind-spot monitoring system did not always alert as expected, rear cross-traffic warnings could come late, and lane-keeping assist can feel aggressive. That means you should test the driver-assistance systems carefully on any used example you consider.

Should I buy a 2018 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.53% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 stands out as a completely redesigned full-size SUV with more interior room, greater comfort, superior cargo space, and significantly more towing capacity than the Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of space, comfort, towing ability, and modern tech in this generation, the 2018 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2018’s redesign and feature set give it a clear appeal for shoppers who want the most capable version of this SUV.
