Is the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox a good car?

Generally — the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox earns 4.3/5 from owners and 7.2/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners most often praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and good fuel economy. The review summary also points to the turbo engine as a welcome upgrade for power and efficiency, while the overview frames it as a practical compact SUV for buyers who value people space more than maximum cargo room.

The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 31.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the comfortable ride and efficient turbo powertrain. The expert review also describes the Equinox as refined and inoffensive, which suggests a vehicle built to be easy to live with over time.

The powertrain is described as adequate and generally quiet, with the redesign helping the engine work harder without feeling overwhelmed. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and any signs of engine-related concerns before committing.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Equinox?

At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and repair quality. Because the model’s appeal centers on comfort, technology, and practicality, you should also focus on how well the cabin, infotainment, and safety features have held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans four trims, and the base model is the most stripped-down version. Higher trims add more comfort and safety equipment, while the Premier trim brings a more upscale cabin feel and more available options.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available, and the review notes turbo lag and a hint of torque steer.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes Rear Seat Reminder and Teen Driver technology. Driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are largely limited to the LT and Premier trims, and adaptive cruise control and full-speed-range automatic emergency braking are not available.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet’s MyLink system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar services, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection. A 360-degree surround-view camera system is also mentioned, while navigation and Bose audio are optional.
• Fuel efficiency: The review says the EPA estimates 28 mpg in combined driving for the front-wheel-drive version, while the test result came in at 23.3 mpg.

Which 2018 Chevrolet Equinox trim should I buy?

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the most basic way into the Equinox, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest entry point and can live without the richer comfort and safety content found higher up.
• LS: This is the better starting point for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
• LT: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of equipment and available driver-assistance features, since much of the safety content is concentrated here and above.
• Premier: Choose this if you want the most upscale cabin feel and the most fully equipped version of the Equinox, but expect to pay more for it.

Safety-related driver-assistance features are largely limited to the LT and Premier trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Equinox?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,316 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,124, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox's resale value?

The current average of $12,124 sits slightly below last year's $13,259.

That softer pricing suggests the Equinox has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.

The model’s broad appeal as a comfortable, practical compact SUV should help keep demand from disappearing entirely. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox safe?

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes Rear Seat Reminder and Teen Driver technology, and OnStar’s Guidance Plan adds automatic collision notification, crisis assist, and emergency services. Chevy’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are largely limited to the LT and Premier trims, and you cannot get adaptive cruise control or a full-speed-range automatic emergency braking system.

The safety review also notes that crash-test ratings were unavailable at the time of publication, so you should lean more heavily on the equipment list and trim-level differences when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 brings a full redesign that makes it smaller, more competitive, and more tech-forward than the prior generation.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $13,672, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $12,124 average.
• It adds HD rear-view and surround-view cameras.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2018 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you can spend more for added camera tech and a newer model year, the 2019 is the cleaner upgrade path.

How does the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox compare to the 2018 GMC Terrain?

Our experts score the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox 7.2/10 and the 2018 GMC Terrain 6.2/10.

The Equinox is the better value here, with a lower average used price and a much larger pool of listings to shop. The Terrain is slightly stronger on deal share and accident-free share, but it costs more on average and offers less highway efficiency. If you want the broader selection and lower entry price, the Equinox is the easier recommendation.
