CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Sequoia

Summary
With 249 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,420, 32.1% of 2017 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Sequoia 4.5 / 5 stars.
58.6% of 2017 Sequoia models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia stands out as a large, truck-based SUV built for buyers who want three rows of seating and the durability that comes with a body-on-frame design. It shares its platform with the Tundra, and Toyota’s buying guide emphasizes the Sequoia’s North American focus, its family-hauling mission, and its reputation for dependable powertrains. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is a full-size SUV that prioritizes toughness, towing ability, and long-term durability over carlike refinement.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the Sequoia’s established formula. The guide describes the second-generation Sequoia as a reliable family hauler with tried-and-true components, and it notes that all Sequoias from 2013 onward got the 5.7-liter V8. It also highlights the sliding rear window as a standout feature, while warning that the rear window mechanism can be a problem area and that frame rust is something shoppers should inspect carefully. The same section also points out that brakes are a common wear item because of the Sequoia’s size and 6,000-pound curb weight.
For buyers considering a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia, the appeal is straightforward: it offers the space, strength, and reputation for reliability that many large SUV shoppers want, while still carrying some of the compromises of a truck-based design. Fuel economy is a known weak point, and the ride can be truck-like, but those drawbacks are part of the Sequoia’s character.

Nice driving vehicle. Good features on the limited model. The only thing this one did not have was a remote starter option, which we will get installed. This the reason for the 4 star and not 5 star rating.

Good ride and lots of room. Like most of the controls except some could be more user friendly, IE: have to push button every time to fold in mirrors. Should be setting to do it automatically. Our last sequoia lasted forever and we NEVER had to do a thing to it. If this ones is as good, Ill be over the top happy!

Yes — the 2017 Toyota Sequoia is a good choice if you want a large, truck-based SUV with three rows of seating, strong towing confidence, and a straightforward, proven character. It earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which fits its appeal as a durable family hauler for buyers who value toughness and space over refinement. The Sequoia’s body-on-frame design and long-running V8 setup support its reputation for dependable powertrains, while its truck-like ride and poor fuel economy are the tradeoffs you accept for that capability. With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia’s reliability case is built around its straightforward, proven hardware and Toyota’s reputation for durability. Its truck-based construction and long-running V8 setup are part of why it appeals to shoppers who plan to keep an SUV for a long time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the basic formula and more about finding a well-maintained example that has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to body condition, frame condition, and signs of hard use. Because this is a truck-based SUV, you should focus on overall wear and maintenance quality rather than just mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 246 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 58.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,701.65, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia makes the most sense if you want a proven, full-size SUV with real towing ability, three-row space, and a durable feel. If your priority is value and you like the idea of a straightforward, long-lasting SUV, the 2017 is a solid primary target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the newest badge.
