Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out as a practical three-row family SUV that blends space, efficiency, and Toyota’s reputation for reliability. In this generation, Toyota refreshed the Highlander Hybrid for the 2017 model year with a restyled front fascia, new headlights, and new taillights, while also making the hybrid more accessible by adding LE and XLE trims. It was also the year Toyota SafetySense became standard across the lineup, adding a welcome layer of driver assistance to a vehicle already aimed squarely at family buyers.
Under the hood, the 2017 model uses an updated gasoline engine that is identical to the non-hybrid version and produces 295 horsepower. The hybrid system remains paired with Toyota’s AWD-i setup, which uses a third electric motor to drive the rear axle rather than a mechanical transfer case. That arrangement helps the Highlander Hybrid deliver the traction of all-wheel drive without giving up efficiency, and the model’s cabin remains a strong point with seating for eight in lower trims, available captain’s chairs in higher trims, and useful cargo space when the rear rows are folded. Owners also tend to praise its spacious interior and impressive fuel economy, though some note that pricing may not represent the best value and that battery-related recall concerns have come up.

| Year-Round High | $25,631.59 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,549 |

If you find a listing below $22,528.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid a good car?
With a user rating of 3.8/5, this is a solid pick if you want a family-focused hybrid SUV that emphasizes space and everyday usefulness over excitement.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, impressive fuel economy, and family-friendly features, and many say it works especially well for long trips. The overview also points to its three-row layout, comfortable cabin, and strong efficiency as the main reasons it appeals to shoppers who want practicality and hybrid savings in one package.
If you need a comfortable, efficient SUV for hauling people and gear, this model fits that use case well. The current market also shows 33.6% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid reliable?
The 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is presented as a practical three-row hybrid SUV with a strong focus on family use, comfort, and efficiency.
Owners describe it as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with the hybrid system and family-oriented design contributing to long-term appeal. The review summary also reinforces that it is a vehicle many owners feel they can count on for regular driving and road trips.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and any prior recall-related issues have been properly addressed before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
At 62.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records or other red flags. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and overall maintenance quality.
Because this is a family SUV with hybrid hardware, you should also focus on how well the vehicle has been cared for over time. A clean-looking listing is not enough on its own; condition and documentation matter a lot here.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can buy now if you are selective and willing to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

- Price trend: Prices are up 4.04% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 62.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,528.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $24,499 sits slightly above last year's $23,549.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which can support resale confidence if you buy well. It also means you may not see steep discounts unless a listing has higher mileage, prior damage, or weaker condition.
For a future seller, the trend is encouraging because it points to steady demand rather than a softening market. If you keep the vehicle clean, documented, and well maintained, you should be in a better position to protect value.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.04% year-over-year.
Consider the 2016 if:
- It offers a well-equipped, value-oriented hybrid SUV with a distinctive semi-luxury feel.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better primary choice if you want the refreshed look, family-friendly packaging, and a market that still offers some deal potential. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2016 is worth a look for its value-focused appeal, but you should still compare condition and history closely before deciding.
